MS in Mathematics - University of Houston

I got started teaching during the late P.T. Chang's Calculus II class at Mat-Su college. Part of his teaching strategy was to have student teach the class in order for them to develop a better knowledge of the material. I took a liking to teaching right from the start.



I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Alaska Anchorage, as well as a Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of Houston. 

I tutored both at UAA and at UH in their Mathematics departments, and I have started tutoring independently in 2020.

About the lesson

First, I'll go over the basics, such as a meeting place and time, what sujbect they'll need help with, and my hourly rate. 

Next, during the meeting, the student will bring their textbook/related material, we go through the process step by step, then we work an example problem. 

Thirdly, I scaffold the student's learning so as to provide less and less support as they are able to do sample problems themselves. 

Finally, when the student is ready to be done, I put worked scratch paper into a manilla envelope which I give to the student for them to review what was went over.

If the student needs further tutoring, they will bring this envelope so we can review past instruction as well as develop a collection of progress showing where the student was and where they are now. 



I've mainly worked with college-aged students as well as a high school student or two.

I have almost no experience teaching middle school or lower subjects, so I'd probably charge $10 less an hour for those students until I became more experienced.

Details

Typical pricing is $40 per hour with half off for the first hour.

If the meeting place is off campus and in Anchorage, I'll charge an extra $10 to cover gass costs. 

Rates start on the hour, and payment is due (cash or check) at the end of the meeting.
