About Luke

Due to my education in philosophical mathematics, I bring a unique perspective to math. My focus is always to observe the patterns within creative problem solving, and I always seek to show the beauty within the forms of mathematical reasoning. I have never considered math to be a boring process of memorizing formulas and applying. Instead, math is about exploring the world in the light of a beautiful curiousity. Math should inspire wonder in its students. I try very hard to share my enthusiasm for math by shaking off negative stigma, thereby revealing the truly creative essence at the heart of mathematics.

I studied Philosophy of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley. I have been teaching math since 2021 at the high-school level, including Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus. I have worked with students in a range of ages, from 4th grade through 12th. My preference is for the higher-level math, but I am eager to help teach the fundamentals wherever needed!

I was homeschooled myself, and I have a love for the style and flexibility it provides. I maintained connections with the faculty at the program I went through, and when I graduated I was able to fill their need for a math instructor. This was the beginning of my career, and provided me the opportunity to grow in experience and reputation. Now I teach at multiple programs and tutor students regularly.

I studied Philosophy of Mathematics at U.C. Berkeley, graduating in 2021 with my B.A. in Philosophy and a minor in Logic.

I was an economics/philosophy double major for my first 3 years in college, meaning I was exposed both to the applied as well as the purely theoretical side of mathematics.

I began teaching math at various homeschool co-ops right after graduating. I have done this for two years, and I love my job!

About the lesson

I offer free 30 minute sessions to assess how well we will work together. I want to make sure our experience is excellent!

I am open to short term connections, meeting once or a handful of times (to prepare for an exam, to clarify some topic, etc.) or regular meetings through the year!

Truly, if I have the time, I am happy to meet together.

I have worked with students of a wide range of ages, from 4th grade through 12th. I am flexible and well equipped to assist with any level of mathematics, even through college-level math.

There is more to math than skill. Math has two sides: The computational, equations side, and the purely rational, problem solving side. Each use a different side of the brain. You want to find an instructor who observes the balance, and displays an appreciation for this whollistic view of math in their character. You dont want a dry teacher, because so much of your success in a math class will have to do with the teacher!

Details

I charge an hourly rate of $40 per hour.

I am open to meeting for any length of time, from meetings as short as 30 minutes or as long as you need! Typical meeting times are for one hour.

If I need to travel for our meetings, I charge a distance fee of $5, and I ask that we meet for at least 1 full hour.
