About Hazel

My services stand out because I have previous background experience in tutoring kids in not only math but in enlgish and well.

I enjoy helping my students understand the material. I was in their position once. Not understanding what the teacher was talking about and I always wished someone was there to help me. And me being able to help students not feel isolated and engage in the lectures is what I enjoy the most about what I do.

I got started into teaching when I was very little. I taught my little cousin her ABC's. Soon after that I met my friend in kindergarten who could not speak any english, so I translated and taught her the whole lesson in spanish. From there as I got older the more I would volunteer at my old elementary school.

I have started tutoring since I was about 15 years old. I would help kindergarten-second grade on reading and math. I have also taken calculus classes at the University of California Riverside.

About the lesson

My typical process for working with a new student is going over what they understand already, and learning what they are having trouble in. Doing this will help me learn what the student needs to focus on as well as understand the right teaching method to go about tutoring the new student.

I have worked with students of all ages. I have tutored 24 year olds as well as high schoolers and even those in elementary school. All of them had varying subjects. Some of the older students I have helped were tutoring them in their english classes, while more of the younger ones I have tutored have been helping them in their math classes.

An advise I would give is that every student is different. No student learns the same way as others. I would know that because I was that student. The standard teaching method hurt me more than it did help me. I always felt like I was slower and did never understood any lesson taught to me entirely. So my advice would be to be creative and to have patients. Do not drill in practice questions after practice questions until the student understands. Talk and listen to the student.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A question students should think through before talking to teachers about their needs is find out first what they are not understanding about the whole lesson. At what part of the lecture did they get lost on or get confused with.
