About Maichen

Hi! My name is Maichen Cripe, and I am a junior in high school. For the past 2 years, I have dedicated a lot of my free time to tutoring students in elementary school through high school in math. I lead a club at my school that organizes math tutoring in my school community. I excel in math, especially algebra. I am always extremely eager to help anyone who struggles in math. I have great communication skills, as I have a lot of experience communicating with students and explaining how to solve a math-related problem. I am also very friendly. I know how intimidating it can be sometimes when you are getting tutored, so I make sure to be as friendly and caring as possible, always moving at the student's pace.

I joined a math tutoring club during my freshman year of high school. This club allowed us to go to schools in our community after school and tutor a group of students who struggled in math.

I have spent the past 2 years tutoring students in elementary, middle, and high school. Usually, during the school year, this would be after school, and I would travel to one of the schools in my community to meet with a group of students that needed help whether that be to study for a test or get homework done. I also used my study hall during the school year to go to a math teacher's classroom and pull out a group of students who were struggling to work with them individually and really help them. My forte in math is algebra, it is my best subject and favorite subject!

About the lesson

I always introduce myself to the student to make the whole experience more comfortable. I then will ask what they are struggling on or if they have any assignments they need to complete. During the tutoring session, I go at the student's pace and always work through a few problems with the student and then ask them to do a few on their own to see if they understand it.

I have worked with very young students from the age of 4. I have also worked with older students at the age of 16. There are many personalities that I have dealt with. A lot of students I have worked with have been shy, and others have been very outgoing and get distracted easily.

My advice is to look for someone that is very passionate about what they teach because those types of tutors can explain things very well.

I was asked to be the leader of a student-run math tutoring club at my school. In this club, we organize math tutoring sessions after school at all the schools in our community. As the leader, I am in charge of contacting schools, setting up meetings and making sure everyone is being a good tutor. From this position, I have gained a lot of experience in tutoring and have also gained leadership, good communication, and people skills!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I believe they need to identify what they are struggling with. Maybe that is a problem or an entire topic in math. Usually, I would prefer if a student at least tried a problem before asking about it or saying they can't do it.
