About R Laurence

I am a retired college professor with a PhD in the geological sciences. I taught for amost 45 years and have a love of learning. I still am Director of Nature Programs and Teaching at a summer camp in New Hampshire and will be going into my 50th year in that position in 2019 so I have worked with students from age 8 to mid-40's. I have specialized in environmental applications of geology and have a broad background in related sciences such as ecology. I also have extensive experience teaching "in the field" (outdoors). In 2018 the New England Environmental Education Alliance presented me their Non-formal Environmental Educator Award. I have made many public presentations on the environment, climate change, geology, and more. At the University of New Haven, I taught the Introduction to Environmental Science course which was taken mostly by non-majors. I can talk about science in terms that students can understand.

I started when I was a senior in college and was hired to teach a section of the Physical Geology laboratory. I liked it and seemed to be good at it. One thing followed another and I realized that I got a lot of pleasure from sharing my knowledge and for exploring the Earth with my students. It was also a chance for me to learn from them and to make a living by visiting some really exciting spots.

I was a university professor for 43 years and worked almost exclusively at small schools where my classes had 10-20 students. In many cases, I worked one on one. I have 49 years of teaching experience at a summer camp where we have a science-based nature program. I work with children 8-15 and with young adults (who are on staff in our program). We limit our class sizes to 8 and in the afternoon and evenings we are available for individual "instruction" in an informal setting. At the beginning of each summer, I teach, along with two colleagues, a clinic that teaches others how to run their own nature programs at a camp or outdoor center. This includes lesson planning and outdoor education techniques.

When I first meet a student, I want to chat and find out more about them. What are their interests, what do they enjoy doing, what is their favorite subject, sports teams, and so on. Then I'll ask what they hope to accomplish through the tutoring. If we can define what their problems or needs are, then we can, together, develop a plan for getting there. Learning does not have to be a chore. It can be fun and I would hope to bring them around to that point of view. If I can get them excited about something initially, then we can start there and move on to more specific goals.

The most important thing is to earn the student's trust. To do that, I have to really listen to what they have to say and we have to become partners in the endeavor.

i have worked with 8-15 year olds in a summer camp, science-based nature program setting. I have worked with 17-18 year olds who were on my staff there. I worked with undergraduates both majors (environmental science) and non-majors along with Masters degree graduate students. I have also done some workshops and outdoor classes for lay people from 8-80.

The first thing I would say is to make sure that you are comfortable with the teacher. Do they treat you with respect, do they listen? Next I would tell them to discuss their needs with the teacher. Ask them if they feel comfortable working with you on that. You need to get an honest answer. Finally, I would ask for the names of previous students and contact them to find out what' what.

I ran a field geology course where we had 3 one-day trips, a 5-day trip to West Virginia, and a 3-day trip to New Hampshire and Vermont. For the "final exam", I took the students to a location in New Hampshire with some really interesting geology. I left them there, on their own, for three hours to work on it together. When I returned, they had to explain to me what they were seeing and what the geology "story" was. They were so excited. They had it nailed and they did it on their own.
