About Mary
Hi, I’m Mary! I hold a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in History from Newcastle University and am preparing to begin my master’s degree in History. I also achieved an A* in A-Level English Literature and have over a year of experience tutoring GCSE and A-Level students across English Literature, History and Religious Studies.
I began tutoring because I enjoy helping students overcome subjects or skills they may initially find difficult and watching their confidence grow. I am chatty, patient and approachable, and I want students to feel comfortable expressing their own ideas and asking questions.
English Literature is not about finding one perfect interpretation, but learning how to explore texts thoughtfully, support ideas with evidence and communicate arguments clearly. My aim is to help students improve academically while developing greater independence and a genuine enjoyment of literature

My lessons are relaxed, supportive and tailored to each student’s individual needs. I work with GCSE and A-Level English Literature students, helping them build confidence in close textual analysis, essay writing, argument development and exam technique.
Lessons are typically one hour long and may include guided discussion, quotation analysis, essay planning, model paragraphs and practice exam questions. I break difficult ideas into manageable steps and encourage students to develop their own interpretations, rather than simply memorising information.
