About Barbara
Welcome to my Private Voice Studio! My background includes undergraduate and graduate degress in singing and seventeen years as a professional singer, during which time I performed leading roles with New York City Opera, Washington National Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Central City Opera, the New Jersey Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and the American Symphony at Carnegie Hall, among other groups. After earning a masters degree in arts administration, I became the executive director of the Marilyn Horne Foundation and later, program consultant for the Marilyn Horne Legacy at Carnegie Hall. In addition, I adjudicate national singing competitions; and give master classes on opera and song repertoire and lectures on arts management at universities. Twelve years ago I was drawn to teaching voice as a way to share my considerable knowledge of classical singing and of the singing business, and to share my passion for singing and classical music.
I LOVE seeing the look on a student's face when she/he FEELS something I am asking them to feel - like buzzing in the front of their checks and head! It is a look of wonder..."I didn't know I could make that sound!!"
I decided to combine my training (undergraduate and graduate degrees in voice), 17 years as a professional singer, decades of experience mentoring and advising young artists, and passion for singing and classical music.
I bring the following education and experience to my teaching:
- Undergraduate and graduate degrees in voive
- 17 years performance career singing leading roles with multiple opera companies and symphonies
- 20 years experience mentoring and advising young artists
- A lifetime of passion for the voice and classical music!

Prospective students are asked to have a consultation with me to determine if we are a good match as teacher and pupil. In the consultation the student performs several selections (songs or arias), and then we discuss my approach and whether it will serve the student in improving her/his technique and musicality.
I teach classical vocal technique, which includes learning to project the voice without a microphone. My students sing a variety of music, including classical and musical theater.
I would advise a potential student to ask questions, so there is no misunderstanding as we progress. Also, I advise all of my students to tell me if anything I ask of her/him is uncomfortable. Finally, I look at teaching vocal technique as a journey - one which does not reach the final goal in a short period of time. Building a technique is detailed and takes TIME. The student needs to be patient with her/himself. The student must practice in order to improve. Finally, I want every single student to experience JOY in singing!
This summer at the Mostly Mozart Festival, I saw a performance of the famous Japanese production of Shakepearse's drama Macbeth. The production was astonighing!!! - one of the most incredible theatrical experie ces I have had in my life!!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to understand that the process of learning to sing requires focus and discipline, so students need to ask themselves if they are truly committed to learning and practicing. Also, students need to ask themselves if they are pursuing this because it is something they really want for themselves; doing it to please someone else is not something I encourage.

Barbara Hocher really understands what's important in classical singing. She puts her students at ease with her warm manner, and yet is able to communicate frankly and clearly when telling students what to focus on and how to improve. She has a vast knowledge of the repertoire, and is great at matching song choices to the individual. Barbara truly provides useful and actionable advice and instructions to students to help them improve their technique, and she has the patience of a saint. Highly recommended!
Barbara is an excellent, experienced voice teacher - warm, observant and knows how to get the best out of her students. She goes above and beyond most and particularly wonderful with young singers. We are so grateful to have had her as our daughter's voice teacher. Thanks to her influence, our daughter is now studying classical voice.
“Barbara has done wonders for my voice and confidence as a singer. My technique has improved dramatically and the quality of my voice is so much better. She has taught me how to sound present, unforced, and resonant while I’m singing. She is a dedicated teacher, wonderful friend, and I truly appreciate having the opportunity to work with her.”
