About Robert

MIHOVIL PHOTOGRAPHY

Robert Mihovil is a Galveston freelance photographer whose work has achieved national recognition through its use in news and general interest publications, advertisements, annual reports, illustrated brochures, membership directories, political campaigns, travel guides and web sites.

Mihovil’s photographs have appeared in news and feature articles for Coast Monthly, Coastal Living, National Geographic, Newsweek, Offshore, People, Smithsonian, Texas Highways, Texas Journey and Time. The Austin American Statesman, Boston Globe, Guidry News, Houston Chronicle, The New York Times and USA Today, have also published his work.

Mihovil's passion for photography is equaled only by his love for family and Galveston Island. His colorful imagery reflects the way a native Galvestonian sees and appreciates his hometown.

A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, Mihovil majored in photography and received a Bachelor of Journalism degree in 1980. After graduation, Mihovil established his own photography studio, where he continues to cover assignments for a diverse clientele.

Each summer for the last 20 years, Mihovil serves as photography instructor for Texas A&M University at Galveston Sea Camp, teaching five Photography courses for ages 13-18, (concealed information) He teaches with the philosophy “learning by doing” and “keep it simple.”

I enjoy everything about photography. I enjoy meeting new people and sharing my photography knowledge and experiences with my students. Getting photographs published is incredibly important to young photographers just getting started, so I also work constantly to help my students submit images for publication. In the last three years at Texas A&M University Sea Camp, I've had 85 students published in Coast Monthly Magazine, Galveston Monthly Magazine, Guidry News and the East End Historical District Newsletter.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Judy Wern, Executive Director of the Texas A&M University at Galveston Sea Camp Program contacted me about teaching photography, then hired me to teach photography classes.

I have a Bachelor of Journalism Degree from the College of Communications at the University of Texas at Austin.

I've taught photography at Texas A&M University at Galveston Sea Camp for the last 20 years. I teach five week long photography classes each summer for students ages 13-18. "Photography For Beginners", "Advanced Photography", "Cell Phone Photography", "Digital Photography" and "Photojournalism".

About the lesson

I start with a phone call to the new client to discuss their photography skill level, digital camera equipment, interests and time schedule. Next, I meet with the client and help them set up their digital camera to take the best pictures possible. I then go over photography tips that will exponentially improve their photography ability. Next, we go on photo shoots to test their skills and learn by doing.

At Sea Camp I normally teach students ages 13-18 years old. Sea Camp Photography is a week long course. I limit the number to 13 students.

I've taught photography for Elderhostel and Exploritas for adults ages 55 plus. These photography classes were also week long courses.

I also teach photography to individuals by the hour.

Look for a teacher that works as a professional photographer, one with real life experiences and knowledge of business ownership.

I recently tabulated all the photographs published by my 13-18 year-old Sea Camp photography students. In the last two years, eighty-eight students had their images published in various publications including Coast Monthly Magazine, Galveston Monthly Magazine, Guidry News and the East End Historical District Newsletter.
