About Karen
My name is Karen and I love creating! I also love to teach and I've been doing both for 20 years. Well, not both at the same time exactly.
I've taught art and graphic design to high school students in PA for six years. The best part was seeing my students growth in such a short time using techniques that I taught them! It was sort of like passing the torch to the next generation of visual creators!
I studied graphic design and fine art at the Art Institute in Philadelphia and I graduated with a 4.0 in 1998. Wow, just saying that makes me feel old!
Today, I run my own fine art and graphic design studio in Maryland in a historic town on the Susquehanna River. I also do painting parties for themed events. I have an online Etsy store where I offer custom pet portraits, a showcase of fine art and even digital downloads of inspirational saying.

As far as creating a piece of art like a painting, I guess the most enjoyable part is when you're in that creative groove. The one that keeps you up to the wee hours of the night because you can't wait to see the finished piece.
When I teach, what I love the most is watching my students grow and to watch them use methods they learned from my teachings. It truly is an honor to help an aspiring artist.
My high level of experience was needed to create a curriculum and teach the art and advertising program in Delaware County, PA.
I graduated with honors from the Art Institute of Philadelphia. On a graphic design level for over twenty years, I've worked with numerous Fortune500 companies, small businesses, schools, universities, popular software firms, musicians, restaurants, doctors...just about any business that needs someone to help "make it look pretty."
From the area of fine art, I've been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil.

First, I like to find out their experience level. From there, I'll ask questions. For example, "Why do you want art lessons?" or "Who's your favorite artist?".
This helps me get to know my student a lot better. I also like this time to determine if I need to apply any specific teaching method. For example, my style of teaching and material to cover will vary from student to student.
I've worked with mostly high school students. Some of my high schoolers were of the autistic spectrum with IEP's. I've also conducted painting parties to adults as well as the Mommy and Me painting events.
So basically, all ages and from many different skill levels!!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think the most important thing to think about is simple.
What do you want? What is your goal? What do you hope to acheive from the time spent with the teacher.
