About Rayn

I've been a photographer for over 10 years and teaching photography for 4. I actually started by teaching youth photographers and went on to see them win awards with their work. Now I want to use that skill set to help individuals from all backgrounds to advance. I can take an individual who's never held a DSLR the tools to be operating in full manual, if they'll put in the practice.

I like seeing my students master new techniques. They are the ones who've pushed me to learn so much more.

I'm a licensed teacher and during my time as a 4-H Extension Agent, I was able to combine my photography experience with my teaching skills. Since starting teaching 4 years ago, I've been able to teach students from age 12-70.

My training came from years of lessons, mentoring, and professional photography. I'm actually a licensed teacher, so I use my teaching skills to insure a custom experience for each student.

About the lesson

After the initial contact through the this website site, I prefer to speak with a potential student over the phone. During this phone consultation, we discuss what gear a student has, what their learning goals are, and what their current knowledge level is. This phone consult gives a potential student the opportunity to get to know me and decide whether by services will match their needs.

If we decide that my lessons, match your needs, then we schedule our first meeting/lesson. I typically want to meet in a public place for our first meeting, from there, I'm fairly flexible. If you already have a camera and a laptop, we'll give right in on the first lesson. If you don't have equipment yet, our first meeting would didn't going over your needs and looking at my equipment to determine what will work for you.

I've worked with students as young as middle school age all the way to senior citizens. Students have various backgrounds from never using a DSLR, to intermediate students wanting to learn advanced lighting and editing.

Don't spend a ton of money on equipment just yet. Meet with someone experienced and they can help you save money by getting the best equipment for the money. There are many ways to get really good gear and avoid some common pitfalls. The other advice, learn to use the equipment you've got before you start buying more advanced stuff.

My most find recent event was the opportunity to photograph the birth of my best friend's daughter. I've captured many births, but being there for her as her photographer AND friend was a surreal experience.

Details

Yes, I offer standard pricing $50 per lesson. This includes travel up to one hour. I will travel further with a gas stipend included. Lessons are not a set time. I expect them to last a minimum of 1 hour, but no more than 2. I find that after 2 hours most students become overwhelmed.
