About Peter

I graduated from Kent State University OH with a Bachelors degree in Photojournalism. I started in photography shooting film. I have over 2 decades of experience working as a newspaper photographer for The Press-Enterprise in Riverside.

I have taught photography at Riverside City College, UC Riverside Extension Center, Mt. San Jacinto College, Art Insitute Inland Empire, La Sierra University, Riverside Art Museum.

I am passionate about photography especially 'portraiture' and I enjoy teaching others. People are my favorite subjects although I do photograph events as well. I write a blog on photography (concealed information) My work is on display permanently at the Riverside Convention Center. I have been featured on KVCR Channel 24 (PBS station of San Bernardino)

I transitioned into teaching by starting to teach part-time at Riverside City College. Since then I have taught at UCR Extension Center, La Sierra University, Riverside Art Museum and Art Institute Inland Empire.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Photojournalism. When I was in college, I shot BW and color film. I was the 1st staff photographer at the Press-Enterprise to make the transition from film to digital. So I tell students this:

"If there's a way to destroy a digital image, I found it."

About the lesson

I tend to work around what the student has in terms of gear/equipment and photo-editing software rather than telling students what to use especially in the very beginning. Photography is expensive as it is, so gear and expensive software should not get in the way of building a very solid basic foundation or understanding. Later, once a student feels committed, then they can explore more expensive software and equipment. There will be some minimum requirements like a computer, camera and internet access.

I've taught students of a variety of ages from young teens at high school and junior high through college-aged students and also adults who are retired.

What kind of real world experience does the teacher have?

Is the teacher's experience strictly academic? Has the teacher ever worked as a practising photographer in any capacity?

Look at the teacher's work online. If they don't even have any work online, then it's best you find someone else.

Does the teacher shoot the kinds of subjects you like? Even if the teacher doesn't, it doesn't mean they can't teach you. The most important aspect is how you feel about the teacher's work. Do you like what you see in the teacher's work?

Which operating system are you using? Mac or Windows?

Do you have a lot of different hobbies? Is photography just another of many?

Are you taking up photography as a hobby or are you thinking you might make it a career if you find you are good at it?
