About Georgia

I have a B.S. in physics and am currently working towards earning my masters in Mechaincal Engineering. Having struggled through high school STEM classes I understand how important fundamental concepts are in these classes. I also understand that it is sometimes necessary to back track and re-learn certain topics. A strong and simplistic focus on these basics is not often provided by teachers to the extent that is necessary to succeed in a math or physics class. I have tutored college, high school, and elementary students and take the same general approach to all levels. A non-intimidating and laid back environment is guaranteed to ensure that students are comfortable enough to ask questions that might seem "stupid" to them. Because I promise there is no such thing as a stupid question.

The moment that a student is able to fully wrap their mind around a concept is awesome. It's very gratifying for me to be part of that experience. Also, there is no such thing as too much knowledge of mathematical and physical concepts. So selfishly, every time I teach a student I am gaining a stronger understanding of the subject, no matter how elementary the topic.

I got started tutoring and TA-ing in my college classes as a way to help myself learn. You don't completely understand somethiing unless you can explain it in simple terms. Once I realized how easy it was to help students understand their material I kept at it. My motivation now is to make sure that no student falls behind or feels insecure in their classes as I did at one point. Math is one of the classes that students struggle most with and it's so important for a young person to have a strong grasp on the subject so that they are confident enough to one day pursue a degree or career that utilizes the subject.

I always start with having a student work through a problem that they are currently struggling with to try and see what area they need most help in. If it's a small detail that they have overlooked I will cover that, but most often it's a major concept that they dont comprehend or weren't taught in previous classes. Usually drawing an image or explaining the concept in a simple, comprehensible way will be the next step. I never call the student out and force them to solve a problem completely on their own until they are ready. I will walk them through several examples and ask them to contribute to the process. Finally I will have them walk me through a problem on their own while explaining their reasoning for each step (the most important part).

I've tutored elementary, high school, and college students in person at their homes, on campus, and virtually.

There's no easy way to find a techer that provides you with all of your needs, they are actually hard to come by. It's trial and error. If one person isn't giving you what you need, find another one.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Honestly, don't worry about thinking anything through before meeting with a teacher, tutor, or mentor. If you were able to determine exactly what you needed help with, and the gaps in understanding that you had you wouldnt need a tutor. A teacher/tutor/mentor's job is to help you pinpoint those things. The only thing they need from you (provided that they create a comfortable and non-judgemental learning environment) is an honest answer when they ask you if you understand something.

Details

Pricing is dependent upon what the student needs. Generally it's anywhere between $30 and $50 an hour. I am very flexible and am willing to help with last-minute issues, at odd hours, and am reachable at most any time. If a particular student needs 24/7 access to me the price will go up but it's not a problem.
