About Robert

I am extremely passionate about science and education. I have been in academia my entire life and am currently persuing a career as a university biology professor. Until then, i want to work with as many students as possible to spread my excitement for science. I can promise that after our meetings you will have the confidence and knowledge you need to excel in any science class you take!

Experience and Qualifications:

- PhD in Biology from UCLA

- I have designed and taught online courses for over 3 years

- I have taught as a teaching assistant at UCLA for 7 years

- I have extensive training in teaching. I am in the process of recieveing an associate level certification at the UCLA Center for the Integration of Teaching, Research and Learning. For this certification i have taken several courses in pedagogy and educational research.

I live for that "ah-ha" moment. When a difficult subject all of a sudden becomes crystal clear. That breakthrough is the most rewarding part of teaching. For that reason i look forward to the complicated subjects, because I know that together we can make it click.

I began teaching while i was working on my Bachelors degree at UCSC. I tutored incoming freshmen in Chemistry. I learned that i really enjoyed helping students, who would often come in scared and uncertain, but leave feeling relieved and confident. To me, that transformation was magical, and I have sought as many teaching opportunities as i could since that course.

I have been a student for 23 years of my life. From gradeschool in the Bay Area, to undergrad at UCSC through to earning my PhD at UCLA. Throughout this journey i have taught over 9 courses in the UC system, tutored over 6 courses and taken 4 courses on teaching. I have developed an entire biology textbook with course material for an online education program. I am excited to use these skills to build your confidence and ace any science course you are taking.

My first step is to listen. I want to hear what the student enjoys and what they find challenging. This is a great way for us to get familiar with eachother and also a way for me to see what areas are the most challenging so that we can work together to build confidence in those subjects.

I have worked with a number of students from diverse backgrounds. I participated in a program that taught students from underrepresented communities to provide the resources they needed to excel in university classes.

I primarily work with undergraduate students taking university level courses, but i have also tutored high-school students as well. I welcome all oportunities to teach, and am also happy to work with younger learners.

I think that experience, communication skills and passion are everything. With those traits an educator can teach any subject.

Experience is important because teaching is always experimental. An educator should always be trying new methods and styles to see what works best for each unique student

Communication skills are vital since that is the only way to get the knowledge from my head into yours. Effective communication can make even the most daunting subjects clear and simple.

Passion is the fuel, the motivation that drives an educator. A strong passion for teaching and the subject matter means the teacher will go out of their way to find compelling examples and novel explanations that resonate with their students. Without passion, educators are really just going through the motions.

I recently atteneded a research poster session where one of my students presented a project that we had worked on together. I was incredibly proud of how far the student had progressed and how amazingly confident they were discussing their science. It was truly vindicating and inspiring.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
This is an important question. Students need to know that THEY are the most important part of the learning session. Every instructor should craft their plan to the needs of each student, rather than just teach what they feel like teaching. Therefore, it is really important for students to communicate what sections they are struggling with and what problems they tend to avoid.

So some important questions:

1) What sections or problems do I avoid doing?

2) When i think about an upcoming test, what sections concern me the most?

3) What sections didnt make sense when the teacher explained them?

For a typical session I charge $50 per hour for a single hour session or $40 per hour for 2+ hour session. This price covers general tutoring, working from your textbook, homerwork help etc.

I am also happy to develop educational material specific to your needs (extra homework problems, test questions etc.) I would just ask to be compensated for that time (1-2 hours in addition to the session).
