About Joshua

I'm in my last year of college for a degree in chemistry and minors in psychology and math. Despite initially planning on medical school and a PhD for research, in working as a tutor and teaching assistant I have found a deep love of helping others understand the intricacies of this world. Since I've taken 5 years to exprlore science and math as a college student, my background is both broad and thoughrough. I have had extensive practice communicating and teaching in my postitisions as teaching assistants, a professional meadiator, and in tutoring positions over the years. I also personally enjoy getting to know people and helping them achieve their goals. I'm excited to work with you to reach yours.

I enjoy facing a challenge alongside someone, working together to overcome it, and reveling in that feeling of triumph when we succeed. For me, that is what learning is--a process of challening our limits and growing to overcome them. Education too often prioritizes performing well at multiple points; you learn a small thing, test on it to show how well you can perform, then rinse and repeat. While in some ways effective, this pattern often fails to help people when they stop performing well, for whatever reason. Feeling like you are failing at the learning process creates anxiety and self-doubt, which make actual learning much more difficult. I work hard to change this paradigm. Learning is an individual process with a goal of personal growth, not simply performance. Through a personal develpment mindset initial low performances are helpful in tailoring our learning process. Effort and self respect build confidence, which sustain a learning environment. That growth in self-confidence is what I enjoy most about tutoring. If I do my job right, you gain the confidence that you can suceed at learning on your own, and that will help you for the rest of your life.

About the lesson

Effective communication has to occur to create the ideal learning environment. We can establish this by taking time to understand your situation, goals, and expectations before we begin. Once you've contacted me and we've decided to work together, we'll set up a short discussion where I mostly listen and ask questions. You'll have a chance to explain what your goals are, what you need to get there, and how you would like to move forward. I'll make sure I understand, then share my thoughts on how I can best help you get there. We will take a few minutes to outline a plan together, and then we can begin carrying it out. I'll usually end this meeting with some concept practice and discussion with the student to see where they are more precisely, then we establish what preparation we need to do for our next meeting. Parents and/or guardians must be present for this initial discussion if the student is a minor.

Details

I understand that there is significant variance in needs and situations, and as such my rates are subject to some negotiation. However, the following principles provide the framework for discussion:

-I charge $30 per hour of active tutoring. Because each hour of active tutoring requires at least as much time spent in preparation, this enables me to spend the time you deserve ensuring our time together is productive.

-Very regular meetings raise the cost per hour by as much as $10/hour. Higher demands in meeting and progress require greater amounts of preparation and put more strain on my other obligations. Our initial discussion and scheduling will establish if this needs to be taken into account.

-Appointments can be moved or canceled up to 48 hours in advance. Changes made after this point will still be subject to half the cost of the session. Less preparation than this doesn't give me the opportunity to fill that time, so I lose out on the chance to meet with someone else. The stability in my schedule this provides will help ensure I can give you the time you need.
