About Ryan
Since the start of teaching, I have had the philosophy that no two students are the exact same. This has allowed me to teach each student in the ways that best speaks to them. There is always a learning curve for students with new teachers, but I as a teacher also aim to face the learning curve in our first few lessons to understand my student as best as possible. From there the journey will be a mix of challenges and joys over success.
The journey I get to take with each student as they learn to be the musician or artist they have been dreaming of becoming. Those break through or "Ah Ha" moments are priceless and wonderful. There is nothing more exciting than watching an interested human dig in, discover, refine, and show to the world what they've come to.
Honestly, I don't remember specifically. I think it was a friend who asked me to teach him guitar back at the start of college.
For music lessons, I am a recording artist and performer I've been studying music for about two decades. I studied composition and lyric writing for two years in college, I have a music degree for performance. Beyond that I have worked with students and watched them succeed in their goals since I began teaching.

I always begin with introductions (name or preferred name, area of interest for study, other passions, learning style, and materials)
Name or preferred name: a person's name is extremely important it how you are recognized and represented, knowing the proper pronunciation or how a student desires to be addressed is vital to a good teacher-student relationship.
Area of interest: if you want lessons for piano, I want to know if you have a style of piano you are interested in. Knowing the type of music you listen to helps a lot, so I know the sounds you are recognizing as piano. The same applies to other instruments or studies.
Other passions: by knowing the other passions, I may be able to relate elements of study to thing the student already knows. Sometimes the best understanding comes from a seemingly unrelated topic.
Learning style: I want to know how the student learns (visual, kinesthetic, or auditory) knowing this helps me know what to highlight while teaching as well as challenge the other learning styles to grow. It is possible to be proficient in all three, but as people we have one that is most often more natural.
Materials: lessons need materials some I will have for purchase, others are basic items like notepads or recording devices that the student will then be expected to have at each lesson.
Once all of that is done, we get to work!
The majority of my students over the years have been young (4-18) I have experience with students in the college and up ages as well. I prefer to work with motivated learners as I have a fairly rigorous expectation for my students when it comes to form and practice.
When it comes to music lessons, there are traditional teachers and others. Traditional teachers tend to focus mainly on classical styles of music as a basis for study. There is a lot of benefit to that, but it may also comme with draw backs depending on the teacher. Some students won't learn modern notation styles or have the competencies to step into versatile music environments.
Working with instructors that are other may be good for some aspects but also may lack in the ability to teach proper music theory, form, and competence in classical forms of music.
I strongly suggest for students looking to learn classical for college or orchestral futures to find a strictly classical teacher. For those looking to study for fun or for modern pop style music find an instructor that focuses less on classical. For students looking for versatility on the music journey find an instructor with a classical background who can challenge those skills, but also understands and keeps current on other forms of performance.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Having a good start is important. I find it is best to think through resources first. Do you or your child have the tools needed for the lessons you are looking to take (i.e. instrument for music lessons, art supplies for art lessons, sporting equipment for sport lessons, etc.)
Having an idea of what specifically you are looking to gain from the lesson is always useful. Though most experienced instructors can understand the students skill and take it to the next level, it is more fun for everyone when thrre is a goal in mind. A target to shoot for in essence.
Consider interest level. Especially if you are looking for lessons for your child. If it is a skill you want them to learn, that is good, but may not be worth the time. Instructors often expect their students to work on a skill or set of skills between lessons, which means dedicated time in practice. Ultimately, it's not worth you money or the instructors time if the student doesn't practice.
Sex of instructor can be important for certain students; I know of several students who do not want a male instructor. It is important to know yourself or your child to know will working with a male or female instructor be most beneficial.
Consider cultural background. I know several instructors who are vibrant and can work with anyone, but not all instructors are culturally competent. You want to make sure the instructor you or your child is working with will understand and encourage the aspects that are important to their the students cultural upbringing while they challenge them to grow in their area of study.
