About Coren

I teach beginners through advanced, young children, teenagers,adults and retirees. I make learning piano fun, while ensuring a valuable educational experience. For beginners, notereading will be taught from the very first lesson. I also work with students preparing entrance auditions for music camps and colleges. Lessons are tailored to students' interests. There are plenty of performance opportunities for those students seeking it.

I love participating in the process of musical growth in my students. I love getting to know so many interesting people, and sharing music with them.

My dad trained me in teaching techniques when I was a teenager. I was teaching ten hours a week all through high school. After graduating from The Cleveland Institute of Music, I began my own teaching studio, now in Avon Lake, OH.

I come from a musical family. Both my parents were professional musicians. My dad was a renowned concert pianist and teacher, who taught me from age five until I entered The Cleveland Institute of Music where I earned my degree in piano performance. I am a performing musician. I have been teaching piano my entire adult life.

About the lesson

If it's a beginner, I have a brief conversation with him/her to find out a little bit of their interests and their musical background, if any. Then I dig right in to notereading, learning how the keyboard is arranged, and starting some pieces in the method book. I engage the student the entire time, making sure he is thinking and understanding, and feeling confident.

Many of my students have gone on in musical careers. Many now have children of their own who are taking piano lessons. I believe piano lessons are first an essential part of education for children, and a great source of pleasure for students of all ages. I especially admire my adult students who study piano, making time for it in their busy lives.

Consider what your musical goals are, and find a teacher who will meet your needs. Have a conversation with the teacher to find out if you feel simpatico with him/her. Perhaps arrange a meeting. If you have studied piano in the past, bring materials with you, and perhaps be prepared to play something that demonstrates your skill level.

I recently got to attend a performance by a former student of mine. She performs world folk music on a variety of instruments. I also have attended many performances by my own three children who are all professional musicians. Sometimes I perform with them as well.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I want to read music or only play by ear? Do I have some time to practice most days? Am I able to commit to a weekly lesson time without last-minute cancellations throughout the year, barring emergencies? Am I able to respect the teacher's studio policies regarding payment and missed lessons?

Details

Lessons are $30 per half hour, with small discounts given for 45- and 60- minute lessons. Tuition is due by the month in advance. Students are given bills. I am paid by cash, check, or electronically.
