About Akosua

I teach music education in higher education. My mother taught me how to play the piano, so I have been playing for a while. I taught my mother's students when she traveled overseas for holidays. Sixteen of my 20+ years of teaching have been in higher education in the USA. My specialization is elementary music; therefore, as a teacher educator, I have the distinct strength of teaching and making musical concepts and expressions flow naturally from the child. Educating the whole person is my passion. I seek to make sense of, support, and create a playful music learning environment for my students.

I am an active member of the Minnesota Music Teachers Association. I love teaching and observing beginning students grow. Teaching is a joy!

Just a note that I am back in town after my sabbatical year. I am willing to conduct virtual lessons for students who would rather learn online. My studio is in the Lakes at Deacon's Walk!

As a teenager, I taught my mother's studio students when she traveled overseas for holidays. My music studio is named after her. As a child, my mother taught me how to play the piano. I took the ABRSM piano and Theory exams from childhood into High school. I graduated with a degree in music (B.MUS), and my primary instrument was the piano. I also did a Diploma in Education to become a music educator at that stage.

About the lesson

First, I will chat with the student and get to know their interests and concerns. Then, I will design lessons to suit students' interests.

I have worked with a wide range of students, from 4-year-olds to adults. My specialization is elementary music; therefore, as a teacher educator, I have the distinct strength of teaching and making musical concepts and expressions flow naturally from the child. Consequently, I love early childhood piano instruction for beginning youth and adults. Their growth is very evident.

Find a teacher who wants to work with you and you with them. One is near your home, and of course, one enjoys making and listening to music.

I attended a concert of a family of performers, the Kanneh-Masons from England, at the Ordway for the Performing Arts. It was a memorable evening.

This first lesson offered with Akosua will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

Details

My fee is $35 for a half-hour or $50 for a 45-minute lesson. Payments are due on the first lesson of each month. Lesson cost covers preparation time, an individualized plan for each student, my training and experience, recital preparations, professional organization memberships, etc. If, for some reason, a lesson must be missed, please notify me at least one week (or not less than 24 hours if possible) in advance.
