About Christine

With over 35 years of experience, I understand the challenge of learning to play the piano. I understand the struggle to find time to practice regularly. And I encourage all my students to put in the time and the effort because I know they will be so glad they did. Playing the piano is a skill that gives hours of enjoyment.

I am a professional pianist myself, so I can share my practice experiences, my performance experiences, and relate to students in this way. They can see me play or I can play for them at their request. It is important for young students to have a role model. I accompany groups in the schools, so they can see how playing piano is a useful skill.

I have a bachelor of music in music therapy from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire.

About the lesson

I will meet with the student and parent, if appropriate, to see if the student has any experience, any learning challenges, and any questions about lessons. I loan the music to the students, so they don't have to purchase books they will only need for a short while. I currently use the Faber and Faber series. At the first lesson, we jump right in and begin to learn the basics necessary to play - how do you know which note to play? How do you know how long to play it? How do you know which finger to use?

I stress the fact that learning to play the piano involves two types of learning. First, it is intellectual learning. You need to figure out the "code," for that is what written music notation really is. But, secondly, it is physical learning. You need to develop the skill of playing the notes smoothly and reading the music quickly. This involves much repetition, just as it involves repetion to learn any other physical skill. So I ask my students to play their assigned pieces several times in a row each time they practice.
