Alex Sjobeck is the Adjunt Professor of Music in Jazz Piano at Boise State University. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the Manhattan School of Music and a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado where she taught collegiate classes while obtaining her degree. She has taught semester-long classes as well as masterclasses at universities and high schools across the United States and has been teaching private piano lessons to both young and adult students for around a decade. Her knowledge of music is shown through her thriving teaching career as well as her performance career which has led her to record several albums, compose and score the music for a short film, and perform at acclaimed jazz clubs across the United States such as the Velvet Note in Atlanta, GA, and Dazzle in Denver, CO. She has also received numerous awards from jazz festivals across the nation as well as DownBeat magazine.

I strive to help students meet their individual goals and guide them to set goals. Teaching students what there are interested in is of utmost importance to me and shows the most success and progress. These interests also need to be mixed with the basics such as technique and theory which aid in every aspect of their musical journey.
I have worked with a wide variety of students from young children to adults of all levels.
Hiring a qualified teacher is very important in the success of a student. Having a teacher who is teaching the correct way will easily put students ahead. It is also important to find a teacher that helps to inspire a student and spark their interest. I recommend looking for a teacher who has had musical training in college resulting in them having knowledge of how to teach in the most advantageous way.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What past experience do you have (if any)?
Are you interested in a specific genre?
Do you have any specific goals in mind?
How much time are you able to dedicate to practicing?

Alex was extremely patient and kind when teaching me. I only had the opportunity to work with her for a few weeks but I learned so much. I took what she taught me and started integrating it into my own playing and it’s made a huge difference. Thank you so much, Alex!
Ms. Sjobeck is very patient and able to adapt to her students. I studied with her for a year and also got to see other students work with her and she always had a way of getting each student to accomplish their goals. I think when you look for a teacher, you really are looking for someone to teach you how to learn. So many teachers tell you something or tell you what to do but never help you develop a skillset. Alex is different in that she absolutely focuses on developing a fundamental process so that each student not only learns but knows how to learn. As a result, there is progress I can see immediately, of course, but also years down the road. If you're looking for a teacher seriously, consider someone who will make a lasting impact and will make you a better overall person— not just tell you to do something and move on. Alex is a teacher who, regardless if you pursue music, you will come out better because of her teachings. Highly recommend!
