About Sarah

Hi! My name is Sarah and I'm here to help you learn how and what you want, at the pace that works best for you.

My first piece of advice from experience if you're not sure you're ready to commit to lessons: get the instrument first!

I have been a musician for about 15 years, with experience that covers 8 community theater productions, 4 years of choir, 6 years of church worship band, and 4 years of teaching at a local performing arts studio. The genres I'm most familiar with are soundtracks (theater, film, New Age etc), some classical, pop, rock, and memes. Yes, memes. I'm always excited and eager to learn new genres and styles! Right now I'm challenging myself to learn more about jazz and Latin music. Because I live with a family of performing artists, we're always playing together, challenging each other, helping each other learn and having fun in the process! My sister was my first and most advanced piano student.

I have seen the most success when a student is passionate and excited about a piece that they've chosen to learn. I guide them through concepts that will help them understand not only the current piece, but any future pieces as well. You will learn how to read sheet music, as well as how to listen to music, find your way around the instrument, and make connections between what you hear, read, feel, and play. If a piece is suitable for your playing level but you're not quite there in reading, I will teach it primarily by rote but with adapted supporting visuals (e.g. letters written out, pictures of keys, videos, etc).

I love questions! My job is to help you understand, not confuse you. Ask questions during lessons, or even in between if you need help with practice or worksheets.

Last but not least, my biggest goal for all of my students is independence. My ultimate job as a teacher is to help you outgrow me! As our lessons go on, you'll be able to do more and more on your own--finding sheet music, correcting yourself, etc. until I'm more of a coach and guide than just strictly a teacher.

I first taught friends at 2 separate times as a teenager. I also guided my mostly self-taught sister through a big challenge piece--she emerged on the other side a much more skilled and insightful musician! Later, I was officially employed with a local studio where I taught until the end of 2020.

I am mostly self-taught, but have taken a total of 3 years of piano lessons through Alfred's Level 5 plus some individually chosen pieces. I have practiced and self taught beyond that level.

I am very experienced as an accompanist and church band member, and have been a member of the orchestra/accompaniment team for the performances of 4 local musicals.

In addition to 4 years of "official" teaching experience, I also taught choir for 2-3 years and directed vocals for 2 children's musicals.

About the lesson

When I meet a new student for the first time, I want to know what their music experience is so I know where to start. I also like to know what their goals are for their lessons, what kind of music they listen to and what kind of music they'd like to play. I usually have a 2-way interview where I give them some information about myself and ask them questions as well. Often the questions I ask will depend on the person as the interview progresses and I get to know them a little bit more. After this, we do a short lesson so they have something to work on at home and get to see my style as a teacher, and I get to see their style as a student.
