About Mike

I prioritize finding the right balance of satisfaction and fun, with discipline and concentration, but students are never made to feel uncomfortable in my lessons. I believe that the best results come from feeling relaxed and inspired.

I enjoy seeing my students (of all ages!) grow, improve, and evolve, whether I am teaching them as beginners, or more advanced. Each new discovery, each new difficult passage mastered, and each new piece memorized is a confidence and character building boost.

I began teaching the children of a screenwriter on a TV show for which my boss was composing the score, at the time.

I have a BA in Film Scoring as a Piano Principal at Berklee College of Music. I have taught piano lessons for 10 years in the LA area. I have worked at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Studios as an assistant, writing on Films, TV Shows and commcericals. I currently work as a freelance composer.

About the lesson

We will meet and asses what you want to focus on, and decide what books we should work from, for you. Every student is different so I like to spend the first lesson gauging what the overall lesson plan should look like.

I have had students as young as 5, though I usually say that 6 or 7 is an ideal time to start. I've taught beginners of literally all ages. My oldest was about 74?

I would tell them to make sure they have fun!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about, and plan for, how much time you can reasonably set aside each week to practice. That's one of the most important things because it provides a structure to the plan that helps you improve.

Erin

Mike is a terrific piano teacher!!! I highly recommend him. He came highly recommended to us, and we have been more than pleased. He is currently teaching two of my children (ages 7 and 10) and they love taking lessons from him. He is kind, fun, highly competent, and adapts for different students. His lessons are productive and they leave my kids feeling good about what they've accomplished and ready to learn more.

Mike Meehan is a superb and superbly trained piano teacher; he’s precise and encouraging —what I’ve learned from Mike has kept me playing the piano where other teachers failed.
