About John

I am active in Central New York as a teacher, pianist, accompanist, adjudicator, and have performed locally on the Syracuse University Faculty Series, the Hobart and William Smith College Faculty Series, the Keuka College Series, the Mohawk Valley Community College Series, the Civic Morning Musicals Live! At The Everson Series, with the Society for New Music, the former Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and live on WPEL-FM, Montrose, PA, WXXI-FM, Rochester, NY, and WCNY-FM, Syracuse, NY. I have performed adjudicated, and given masterclasses in the United States, Europe, and Asia. I grew up in St. Louis, MO, studying under Dorothy Dring Smutz, gave numerous recitals there as a boy, and made my debut as a competition winner playing the Grieg Piano Concerto. I have a Master’s Degree from The Juilliard School, where I studied with Abbey Simon and Sascha Gorodnitzki. I served as Barry Snyder’s assistant at The Eastman School, and also spent two years of special study at the Vienna Hochschule under Hans Graf, and was a private instructor in the home of Christa Ludwig in Weidling, Austria. I have taught piano lessons since 1971. I began teaching in Syracuse in 1997, and after brief stints at Syracuse University and Hobart and William Smith College, have one of the most successful private piano studios in Central New York. My students have been accepted for study at the Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, Cornell University, Cincinnati College-Conservatory, Tanglewood Festival, Ithaca College, Mannes School, Berklee School, and Wheaton Conservatory, as well as others. They have won the Syracuse Symphony Youth Concerto Competition, the highest awards in every level of the CNYAMT Competition, the CNYAMT Scholarship Competition, the Society of Friends of Chamber Music Competition, the Kilian Competition, the Geneseo Competition, the Thousand Islands Chopin Competition, the Ithaca Competition, the Patricia DeAngelis Festival, the Robinson Award, and national honors in many other competitions. I also enjoy adjudicating, and through this channel have heard hundreds of student performances in many organizations across the United States, Europe, and Asia. I am past president of Civic Morning Musicals, in Syracuse, NY, recipient of the Tiffany Award of Civic Morning Musicals, have been listed in Who’s Who of American Teachers, and am past president of Central New York Association of Music Teachers in Syracuse. I am the proud father of two children.
