About Benjamin

With 20 years of piano playing experience and 10 years of performing and teaching professionally, I offer an abundance of knowledge in music theory, technique, improvisation, and the art of learning pieces. I can help beginners and advanced musicians alike in their never-ending quest to make progress and find continuous joy in music.

ABOUT ME: I am a classically-trained jazz pianist. I am currently enrolled in the master's program in jazz piano at Manhattan School of Music, and I hold a bachelor's degree in jazz piano (with a minor in music tech) from McGill University. Growing up as a young musician, I've had the great privilege of studying with some very wonderful and accomplished private teachers, such as John Stetch, Joshua Rager, Phil Markowitz, Jan Jarczyk and Joe Salzano. From them, I have observed and learned much about what constitutes a great lesson, skills which I always try to apply in my own teaching. As a performer, I've played with acclaimed musicians such as Taru Alexander, Miles Griffith, Stanley Banks, George Delancey, Daryl Johns, Steve Brown, Josh David Barrett, Jesse Collins, Diana Leigh. I am currently also working on projects in digital production, film scoring, orchestration, composition, and arranging.

Simply loving music and letting its beauty and charm speak for itself is an infectious approach when it comes to teaching. Those who will go far in music don't tend to go far simply because they were pressured to learn a lot of new music each week to appease their private teacher. Sure, I find it very fulfilling to see lesson-by-lesson growth in a student, but nothing quite beats witnessing a student find a song they are very excited to learn or when I help them uncover something neat and awesome about music.

I am earning a master's degree in jazz performance from Manhattan School of Music and hold a bachelor's in music from McGill University.  At MSM, I've completed (and received A's in) two pedagogy classes: Jazz Pedagogy, and Musicians as Educators.  I am a frequently-called substitute private lesson teacher at an NYC charter school called LREI in Greenwhich Village.  I've taught private lessons lessons for nearly a decade. I taught a master class in jazz improvisation as well as conducted a big band rehearsal for youth at the Community School of Music and Arts in Ithaca, New York. I've also performed in an educational show to an NYC public elementary school audience about innovators throughout jazz history.  I've performed as an accompanist for all the young cabaret vocalists in a private vocal studio at the Ithaca Festival.  I've coached musical theater singers and actresses privately for audition repertoire, as well as accompanied live musical theater and contemporary ballet performances such as The Fabulous Fable Factory and Pointe in Motion.  As a piano player, I have extensive performance experience in a wide variety of settings including regular gigs, large performances, music festivals and residencies at jazz clubs.

First, I try to gauge the student's level of experience and playing ability.  If they brought a piece of music to learn, which is encouraged, then (assuming I deem it a good fit for the student) we simply get to work on it, and I will draw from my musical background and knowledge to guide them in areas where they may need help (dynamics, note accuracy, practice methods, rhythms, hand independence, etc). However, if they don't have a piece of music to work on, then I will ask them a few questions in order to decide what music would be appropriate for his/her goals and tastes, or whether they'd prefer to learn how to improvise.  We will then decide on a plan for getting a hold of any music needed for the next lesson, and in the meantime we can work on another piece or any essential music theory concepts he/she might be missing.

I've worked with mostly young middle school-age students between the ages of 12 and 16, but I have also worked with a few adults older than me (in their 30's or 40's).  I've taught a few large master classes for youth ranging from age 7 to 16 as well.  The master classes I've taught have centered around jazz improvisation and ensemble playing, while most of the private lessons have been standard repertoire.  I've also coached actresses and singers on vocal audition repertoire, who have been around my age (mid twenties).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what are your reasons for going into music, and what are your long-term goals, so that lessons can be designed in the best way for you.  Teachers love it when you have a piece of music you want to learn and when you don't forget your music at home!
