About David

A teacher of mine once said if you aim for perfection, you get to be pretty darn good. I like to start with a small amount of material that the student can play very well, and use that to refine the basics. By taking a thorough approach (and playing beautiful music), the entire world of piano and music will slowly and surely open up to the pupil.

In my opinion, tone production and rhythm are the major factors that distinguish a great pianist (and make playing the most satisfying), so this is the major focus of our work. I have a very thorough understanding of proper technique and can prescribe exercises that will strengthen one's weaknesses.

I also have a unique background in that I studied jazz improvisation and classical composition, so I understand the inner workings of the music and can improvise in the styles (jazz, classical, baroque, romantic).

Music is my passion and lifelong study, and I love being able to share that with others. It's a joy to help a student overcome their stumbling blocks and reach a new levels of passion and confidence in performance. I have a thorough understanding of music history, and love to introduce my students to the entire canon of western music.

I grew up in a musical family, and took on some of my mother's students when her schedule filled up. Then upon moving to New York I worked with a number of students while studying at Juilliard.

I graduated from the Juilliard School for jazz improvisation, and continue to study classically with master teacher William Daghlian. I've studied jazz and improvisation with David Liebman, Phil Markowitz, Fred Hersch, Kenny Barron, and Frank Kimbrough. I study composition with Kendall Briggs.

Usually we will talk so I can get to know the student and their goals. Then I'd like to hear something so I can get a sense of their current level.  Further to that, I  like to start right away on some new music, something simple so we can work on sound, rhythm, and phrasing. From there we continue per the student's interest and expand our repertoire.

All ages, beginners through advanced. I teach classical, jazz, and composition.

Its not enough that the teacher play well. Some are gifted with the insight to guide others and some are not. Find someone who instills faith in you and truly believes in the power and necessity of music.
