About Nancy helen

My teaching is tailored to each student and their interest and passion in learning piano. Progress and mastery of each lesson is evident to each of my students as well as their enjoyment. Lessons are taught with attention to strengths and building skills on confidence that increases with each lesson.

My background is in teaching and l have researched how the brain works with relation to mastery of material , learning modalities and eye/ hand coordination and l have applied this understanding to teaching piano.

Students emerge from my piano learning not only piano but gain advantage as to how their brains work with more rapid and effective results in mastering piano and other subjects.

l take into account a student's favorite musician and try to include this music as a goal to work toward with every class.

What l marvel at is the excitement of my students in being so proud of the music they can play on the piano !

The sheer joy of teaching my students the knowledge to play their own piano music is at the heart of my teaching. Students will learn the fundamentals of playing the piano, and , in addition, what l will build upon with them is not only playing music they love but also emphasizing their strengths in playing the piano.

Theory, musical terms, songs and the ability not only to read music, but also to play a number of chords which will go a long way in providing a more comprehensive feel to playing the piano.

The key to this approach in teaching students piano is building upon the student's passion and their love of music .

Piano lessons are designed to enable the student to read and to play music in a way that is conducive to their growth and passion for music with every lesson.

Key to my joy is the pride my students take in enjoying mastering all the songs and exercises l give them.

I began teaching at the request of my students whom l was tutoring. They begged me to teach them piano and l agreed to give them lessons once they mastered their academic studies.

My training in piano began as a child for several years, then in college l picked up further education at the University of Pittsburgh. I resumed lessons as an adult and played at a small concert in the Outer Banks .

About the lesson

Students are greeted . When they share what they know or practiced, we go over a given set of flash cards which increases with every lesson on musical notes, terms, etc. which each student is issued. A review is given wherein the student demonstrates by playing the new songs and chords learned from the last lesson. With each segment of the class, the student learns the new terms and new exercises to practice for homework from several books and flash cards. Mastery of previous lessons is essential, but the underlying theme is excitement and joy in that mastery for the student.

I have taught piano, watercolor and oil painting as well as academic subjects to students of all ages. Children , teenagers and adults have learned and mastered material from my methods.

l have also taught special needs children and they have thrived in learning material.
