When working with a new student the first step is to assess their current skill level and learn their goals. If, for example, the student wants to learn Jazz improvisation I will set up and course of study emphasizing music theory and specific technical exercises. On the other hand if the student wants a more traditional approach the focus will be more on reading and specific repertoire.
