About Steve

I'm an amateur player with the time to give back. The first lesson is FREE, so we can see if what you need is something I can offer. I avoid hardcore method books or playing tunes in all keys-- I want my students to have fun gaining competency the entire time. Your journey as a student with Steve Jones will include finding the music you like in the standard jazz Real Books, learning how to play them with the suggested harmonies, then going out and making them yours. We'll learn reharmonization, creating melodies (improvisation), and how to fit into a group so you can enjoy playing with others at jam sessions and as a private group leader or sideman. You'll be able to get comfortable playing with your group at a winery or other public place if you like, and take your music in new directions. You'll build confidence and be surprised at what you can produce on the piano.

Teaching is not a job or business for me. I think for most music teachers, it's about making ends meet. I teach because I enjoy helping people, and it's exciting to see people on the path to enjoying their own playing. I've been there myself, been helped along the way by my teacher, and now play for my own enjoyment and also the fun of playing with others.

I'm a retired jazz musician, and have the time to give back. I've done it over the last 3 years and enjoyed it.

I'm an amateur jazz piano player. Studied with Dave Peck, pro player in Seattle. I organize Seattle Area Jazz Musicians, a group of about 650 jazz musicians in the greater Seattle area, and help them get to jams to play together regularly.

In addition to about 10 other jams, I hold a jam at my house about every month; it's very inclusive and fun-- no minimum level of experience necessary to play. I believe everyone's working on something, and we all think we need A LOT of work in those areas. Everyone's different, so there is no such thing as a 1-10 scale of performance; rather, we are all on our own paths to making the kind of music we want to make.

As a kid I took classical piano lessons, then jazz piano lessons (in Spokane, WA). Finally studied with with Dave Peck in Seattle. Since I'm retired (from software industry), I have the time to give back and help people get access to playing jazz both individually and with others.

About the lesson

I'm not a formal person; very welcoming, casual, enjoy helping people. Feel free to contact me about what you're looking for, and we can see if I can help. The first lesson's free. Come and enjoy talking about jazz, playing jazz, listening to jazz. We'll see if it seems a good comfortable fit for both. We keep in mind what you want to accomplish, and make milestones toward that. If you have specific things to work on, we'll figure out approaches to that and dive in. Otherwise, I might suggest a roadmap. We can change .

You'll want to get copies of The Real Book(s), vols 1-3, in hardcopy. Also suggested is iRealB for your smartphone, because we'll want to think about adjusting keys for certain situations sometimes. No fancy textbooks. You'll take notes in a notebook for the major things that seem really important.

What you'll get from this experience is confidence at sitting at a piano and playing jazz at whatever level-- you'll be able to make music and play with others, and it will be really really fun.

I charge $50/lesson, with a full hour. If we run a few minutes over because we're really in the middle of something, that's fine. Your passion for making it happen is the important thing.

I can record but will need to charge to get you the video or audio. Best if you record if you wish.
