About Erma

My name is Erma Kyriakos and I have been teaching piano and violin lessons for 10 years. I am continuously amazed by the potential of my new students every year and I cannot wait to meet and teach you or your child. In my lessons, students will learn how to read and write music, learn how to become technically proficient at their instrument, perform with stage presence, and (my ultimate goal) learn to really appreciate and enjoy all types of music and how it can apply to other areas of their life. Just like a new language, music will need to be practiced every day or it will be forgotten and lessons will become futile.

I have a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Florida State University and have experience teaching group classes as well as individual lessons. I have the most experience teaching ages 5-12, however, I love to teach adults as well. I begin students on piano at age 5, and violin at age 7.

I am also a professional musician and gig regularly across the Bay Area in California. I have experience with session work as well as live concerts with acts that come through San Francisco (Margaret Cho, Roger Rocha of 4 Non Blondes, Honey Mahogany of RuPaul's Drag Race). I've played in some of San Francisco's finest music halls including The Great American Music Hall, The Castro Theatre, The Swedish American Music Hall, and Cafe Du Nord.

I enjoy the repciprocity that can happen with a student and teacher. I say it all the time, but I learn just as much from my students as they learn from me. I enjoy getting to know the individual student and figuring out in what ways they will learn best. To me, music can be a very social thing or very individual and meditative or both! It's a language that speaks to everyone and I feel priviledged that I am able to teach and spread that language to others : )

I was a music student myself and loved what music and the ability to play was bringing to my life. I find it fulfilling and rewarding.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I like to get to know the skill level, whether starting from scratch or wanting to pick things back up again after a few dormant years. I try to keep things at a pace that's comfortable for the new students and frequently ask if there needs to be any clarification and will often say it is OK to not get something right away!!!

I appreciate if my students can practice up to 4 times a week. Depending on the age of the student and their experience level in playing, the time spent practicing is different.
