I first assess the students' level and what they would like to learn. I pick a method book that will help the student make progress and I also encourage students to choose their own pieces from outside of the book.
I have taught grades 1-12 and adults.

Erika is a lifetime music educator. Her comprehensive knowledge of all genres is an extremely powerful part of her ability to impart a rounded musical experience. Her teaching style is clear, connected, and enthusiastic. Any student would be lucky to learn from her.
Erika has a wide and extensive and diverse musical knowledge. I’ve learned so much from her.
I’ve had experience with Erika in several different settings, the first being several decades ago. She had a music history class that was exactly what you’d want any history class to be: one that shows the characters bring studied as real human beings, and how their humanity shaped their music. Around this same time, she invited me to participate in a chorus class she ran. PS: I’m an awwwffuuuullll singer. She was kind and welcoming and made me feel welcome to leave if I didn’t like it. Honestly, I stayed just because the class was so enjoyable. Just a few months ago, Erika held a musical theatre history class, in much the same format as the past history class, except over Zoom. It was a mixed-age class. My 12 yo daughter also attended. She likes musical theatre, but, thought she only liked contemporary shows. Through this class, she found an appreciation for many classic works, and enjoyed learning new things about shows she already knew and enjoyed. Erika is approachable, knowledgeable, and can adapt easily to the needs to her students. Her breadth of experience is vast and her personal credentials provide a strong foundation to her natural gifts for teaching and relating to people.
I've had the pleasure to know Erika both as my own music teacher when I was a child at Bank Street and as the choir director at Buck's Rock Camp. She is an amazing wealth of knowledge and experience, and everyone I know loved learning from her. She made learning music enjoyable and easy. I cannot recommend her enough.
I am a Berklee College graduate and have been playing piano since age 5 myself, and I strongly endorse Erika. She has a clear and directive teaching style which has helped my 9yo make amazing progress with repertoire and harmony in a relatively short time. She's particularly effective over Zoom.
