About Jonathan

I served as a tutor in American history and political science while in graduate school, and I loved it! One of the most gratifying experiences I've ever had was running into a former student and being told how I "saved" he and his classmates with my group study sessions. It is already fun to share what you know with others, but it is an extraordinary feeling to know that you made a difference in their academic career! Now that I have graduated, I hope to help as many students as a possibly can. As I am a recent graduate (May 2019) I am offering low rates to my first students!

Prior to earning my master's degrees (at Eastern Illinois University) I served two years with AmeriCorps VISTA, where I managed our social media presence and mentored new VISTA volunteers. Following my first year of service, I was promoted to Leader VISTA where 100% of my time was dedicated to mentoring our new and prospective VISTA volunteers. I was also civically active in college, having run for a county board seat and serving as treasurer of a local political party. Serving others is an important value of mine, and I look forward to helping you reach your academic goals.

Aside from graduating with a 3.73 GPA, I earned a reputation as a cheerful, dedicated, and patient tutor among students in my university's history department. I was always willing to go above and beyond to help my students understand their assignments and prepare for difficult exams. In the weeks leading up to key assignments or exams, I would hold numerous group and independent study sessions with my students, which helped many of them increase their scores and scope of understanding.

If you are struggling in history, government, political science, or social studies courses or simply wish to improve your grade a bit higher, I am happy to help! I have tutoring experience and two master's degrees, so you can be assured that I will be a dedicated and patient tutor. Your academic goals are my goals!

There is nothing more rewarding than to know you've made a difference in someone's educational journey! Tutoring is also a win-win because students get the help and encouragement they need while the tutor gets to sharpen his or her own skills.

My first experiences were in AmeriCorps VISTA (a domestic version of the Peace Corps) in which I was responsible for training new VISTA volunteers and applicants for their year of service.

I have master's degrees in political science and history from Eastern Illinois University. During my time in graduate school I was a student tutor in several history courses, and frequently recieved very positive feedback from both students and professors.

I also served two years in AmeriCorps VISTA, where I mentored new VISTAs and applications. This work required me to understand online portals as well as to facilitate lessons both online and over the phone.

First of all, I seek to get an understanding of the student's overall tutoring needs. This includes an overview of the question or assignment at hand as well as a description of the course and the professor's expectations. It is especially helpful when students share a copy of the course syllabus and any worksheets associated with the assignment at hand.

Secondly, the student and I will create an action plan to help us set and reach our session goals.

If a session is scheduled in advance, I will provide a list of possible academic sources that can be helpful in writing research papers.

Most importantly, I want both the student and I to be fully prepared so that we can work together to help the student better understand the material and improve academic performance.

I have worked primarily with traditional college aged students, but my AmeriCorps VISTA service included mentoring a wide variety of individuals from age 18 to 70.

Just don't be afraid to ask for help! The sooner you ask, the sooner you can begin to grasp the concepts that you are concerned about. The tutors on this site are here because they love this work, so you are sure to be greeted with a smile.

I ran into a former student at a restaurant a couple of months ago, and he told me how grateful he was for my help. He even told me that I "saved" the students in his class through my individual and group tutoring sessions. I was honored that he even remembered me and beyond proud that I made a difference in his educational journey!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Mainly, just be sure to examine the assignment's parameters carefully. Teachers are more apt to provide more helpful advice if it is clear that the student is trying their best to understand the assignment.
