First I would like to get a better understanding of a student’s prior/background knowledge. Knowing what the student already succeeds at academically helps me focus on the areas the where the student struggles.
Once I find where the student struggles I help break down tasks/learning goals to scaffold the student’s learning. When we get a basic awareness of the material I implement projects and hands-on learning, as well as introduce higher-order thinking.
I have found that this process helps not only the student but myself be able to track our successes and progress as we work together.
