About Valeriekehoe

Dyslexia/Dysgraphia Tutor

After I meet with parents and the student, I create a learning plan based upon the student's individual needs. This plan may incorporate Orton-Gillingham techniques for dyslexia (Seeing Stars) or direct instruction with the structure of writing (IEW).

Student learning plans are presented to parents and are then adjusted even further to meet the student's learning style and specific learning needs.

When I hear my students reading and watch them writing, it brings me great joy!

When I hear a student's family tell me they notice a positive difference in their child's reading and writing habits, it confirms we are all on the correct path; and, this is the moment we are all looking forward to experiencing.

I began my career working with adults with disabilities.  During this part of my career, I realized how much I loved teaching and learning.  So, I went back to school while I continued working in the human service field, and earned my M.Ed. in elementary education.  I couldn't stop learning and followed my passion for teaching reading and writing.  I then earned my Reading and Writing Specialist and School Principal certifications.  Finally, I earned my EdD., doctorate in curriculum and instruction, and opened my own tutoring company.

I have a doctorate in curriculum and instruction, a CAGS in Reading and Writing, and a Master's degree in Elementary Education.  Additionally,  I am certified in the following areas:

Reading and Writing Instruction;

K-8 Elementary Educator,

School Principal

I am trained to provide the following types of direct instruction: Wilson Reading System, Orton-Gillingham, FUNdations, Linda-Mood Bell LiPS.

First, I meet with parents to gather information about their child's specific learning needs. Then, I create an individualized learning plan which I share with parents.  When parents have reviewed the plan, we all meet to discuss the plan and make any needed adjustments.  Lastly,  I meet my new student!

I work with ALL types of students.  Many students have an undiagnosed reading disability combined with attention issues.  Other students have medical issues that have prevented them from accessing traditional school instruction, for example, anxiety or anger management issues.  My focus is elementary and middle school students, however, I have also tutored students working on obtaining their GEDs.

Ask your teacher or tutor what they do when you don't understand?  Ask what they do when you are angry, confused, tired or want to quit?

A first grader I tutor told me, "I can't read that!!  We have 'Biscuit' books in school!  I can't read them!!"  Following an introduction to the book, this student read two 'Biscuit' books...and kept them at her house.  Having students keep books I loan them tell me how much they love the books.

What will you do differently to help me?

Do you understand my learning needs?
