About Sherry
I love working with students and teaching them how to read and helping them to become better readers.
I love working with children when I was an aid and it continued from there through being a Special Education Teacher which was my first passion. I have also taught Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Reading. I am currently a Reading Intervention Teacher.
Rank I in Exceptional Education is my highest education from University of Louisville.
I have attended several trainings through my job for teaching reading and phonics.

About the lesson

First, I begin with an assessment to see what phonics the student is aware of such as letter and sound identification then move on to practice the sounds they do not know using words they choose with those sounds. Also, working with long and short vowels is important and again working with words with those vowels. Checking sight word lists to see if student can read them versus has memorized them is always a good starting point too.
Special Education with a range of disabilities, reading intervention students who have difficulty understanding concepts of main idea etc. Grade levels of K-8.
To make sure the teacher has some experience in the subject in which they need help in so that they will receive what they need during the session. Also, age level is important too.
Tutoring a fifth grade student that is reading on a first grade level and she was very eager to work with me. She even ask to take the work we had worked on home with her. She smiled throughout the entire session and I was pleased she was working so hard especially since this was the first time we had met.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should feel comfortable with the teachers and want to be there. Students do not learn from people they do not like.
