About Payton
I have always loved writing and have a license to teach English/Language Arts, as well as experience teaching reading with phonics and writing from Huntington Learning Center.
I am currently teaching Middle School STEM and Pre-Engineering in Wellington, but my passion is to help students improve their writing skills to better prepare them for high school and college.
I have a brother 4 years younger than myself and I began teaching him what I had learned in school around the time he was 3-4 years old. Since then, I've loved helping peers with writing and understanding other things in my classes and I knew I was meant to be a teacher!
I got my Bachelor's Degree from Xavier University in Middle Childhood Education (focusing in English/Language Arts and Science)
Bachelor's Degree in Middle Childhood Education (grades 4-9)
Ohio License to teach Middle School Language arts
Ohio License to teach Middle School Science
Florida Certificate to teach 5-8 Science
Certification to teach Project Lead the Way Design & Modeling
Experience tutoring students grades 1-8 in all subject areas at Huntington Learning Center

I would begin by asking for some pieces of writing from school or by asking the student to read some passages to see what they are struggling with. I would then ask the parent what kind of writing they are hoping for their child to improve in and ask the child to complete a prompt for that style of writing. From there, I would sit with the child and go over the things they did well, as well as what needs improvement then use each session to re-teach and practice some of the things they need to work on. As they gain confidence in their writing and show improvement, we will work on more writing prompts, as well as showing how to re-read and edit their own writing to make final improvements before submitting.
I have worked with students from the age of 6 to 15 from all backgrounds. I try to get to know my students and help them by doing things that appeal to their interests. For example, if a student were interested in NFL Football and needed to improve their persuasive writing skills, I would give them prompts about which football teams are the best or should win certain games and they will have to write a persuasive essay about it.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. A lot of kids believe asking for help or admitting they aren't good at a particular subject makes them seem weak or "dumb", but really, those who ask for help when they need are the strongest and smartest of them all. Realizing your weaknesses and asking for help to improve upon them is the only way one can improve.
When looking for someone to help you, find someone who cares about you, not your scores. A good teacher will not only teach you what you need to know, but will get to know you and help you feel confident in yourself, as well as your abilities.
I have had a few students in the past with ADHD, so I try to help them learn ways to make completing writing prompts more accomplishable. I have done this by encouraging students to take "brain breaks", standing up while they read, or even providing them ways to keep themselves on track during their writing.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to know what type of writing they need help in.
Students should try to identify what they struggle in (spelling, grammer, idea creation, etc.)
Students should also recognize their strengths. What are you good at or what do you like to do?
