About Cici

I'm a freelance tutor with 5 years experience working with children and pre-teens to improve their academic skills with much success. Currently a student at Brigham Young University student, I am still very familiar with the modern academic system and the strategies necessary to conquer it successfully. I can guarantee not only that your child with see an improvement in their grades but in their academic confidence.

I love watching success happen! Both in terms of quantifiable markers like improved grades, and soft markers such as a love of learning or even growing to love the subject they once hated!

As a high school honor student my parents and teachers encouraged me to spread the wealth to younger students and I found I enjoyed it very much.

I have been a volunteer tutor since I was in high school and have 5 years paid experience working with children and pre-teens. Currently, I study at BYU where I help peers review their essays for grammatical and stylistic errors.

About the lesson

I like to spend the first lesson getting to know the student. Their interests, hobbies, etc. From there I get to know what they're struggling with, why, and their feelings towards the subjects they're struggling with. From there I develop a lesson plan that caters to their interests to improve their feelings towards the subject whilst simultaneously improving their skills with rigor.

Male and female students under 14. I've primarily focused in basic math (arithmetic and pre-algebra) and English (essay writing, grammar, reading comprehension, literary analysis, etc.), but am comfortable in many subjects.

No matter the subject, it's important to find a teacher or tutor that you enjoy being around. Working one on one with someone for an extended period of time will become tiring and demotivating if you have even a mild dislike of them. Secondly, look for someone who enjoys education. Someone who actively learns will be more adept at teaching than someone who is innately good in a specific subject because they are comfortable learning and being taught; whereas, someone who is innately good at a subject will be less understanding of struggles one might face or how to teach the subject since it has always come naturally to them.

During the pandemic, my university classes switched online very suddenly. Despite the financial, emotional, and general stress preceding the unexpected change, I maintained a 3.75 GPA. It was a very difficult set of circumstances and I was quite proud of myself for succeeding.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Figure out what you DO understand first. Depending on the subject it might be hard to identify, but start basic if you have to. For example, if you're studying Of Mice and Men, ask yourself if you understand the plot. Do you understand the characters? The setting? From there you can find the crack in your foundation to get more specific help. For example, if you find you're struggling with recognizing symbolic imagery, then your teacher can help you focus on techniques to recognize imagery and what it might symbolize based on the plot or other part that you may already understand.

Details

I tend to charge $25/hour for tutoring elementary school students or general subjects, $30/hour for older students or more specialized subjects. I'm willing to do half hour sessions or fortnightly sessions for parents on a budget or students who need less support.
