About Julie

Helping students to overcome the anxiety of tests, quizzes, and exams fulfills me. I had struggled with test-taking when I was in school, only to realize that I did not realize I had a learning disability. It took me until my college years to finally understand that in order for me to overcome my disability, was to talk with my instructors about what I was struggling with. The outcome was learning new ways to remember things, new ways to take exams, and to know that there was help if I needed. I am here now for students who need that extra help. I have graduated from SDSU in 2020 with a Bachelors Degree in Geography and an Associates Degree in Geography as well as Humanities and Fine Arts.

You could say I've been teaching all of my life. From helping friends and siblings to teaching my own children, I am a lover of learning and helping. I do not teach at an institution due to limitations of the cirriculums of public and private instituions.

I am a Geography Graduate and a Science Laboratory Technician for the Earth Science Department at Grossmont College which allows for me to assist students with labs. I have taken the course myself and so I understand not only the subject matter, but in which the professors teach, allows me to help prepare students for a successful academic semester.

About the lesson

When a student requests my tutoring service, I like for them to fill out a google form that supplies useful information for me to be able to assist with their needs more adequately.

I ask for them to tell me what their favorite subject is in school, what their hobby(ies) are and how they prefer to learn while in class, such as silent reading, interactive lectures with their teacher, or group projects, etc.

I have worked with ESL students, PreK-12 and College students, students with learning disabilities, and students with limited living arrangement situations.

Advice that I would give a student who is looking to hire a tutor is to have an open mind and a little patience. It will take a moment for thetutor to review the material that the student is needing help with, if necessary, so that they may be able to offer the best tutoring service possible. Do not be afraid to question the tutor if there is information that they are giving does not feel correct. Information changes from time to time. For example, when I was growing up, I was taught that we had 9 planets in our solar system and today, the debate continues on whether or not Pluto is a planet.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Questions to think about to ask the teacher are relevent to the individual. Let the teacher know what the subejct is about and if there are any books that is used/read for the assignment(s) that the student is requring assistance with.

Details

I provide one free 1-hour session as an introductory for new students. This allows for the student to decide if they feel they would benefit from my approach. After the 1-hour introductory period, my standard pricing is $15 per half hour. I require at least 48 hours in advance booking. No-shows or cancellations less than 24 hours is charged $15. Cancellations 24 hours or more, students will receive a refund. Payments are due at the time of booking.
