About Emelia

I'm a classically trained singer with a Bachelors and Masters degree in vocal performance plus 10 years of performance experience. Music and performance has been a part of my life since I started piano lessons at age 5. I love starting new projects wheither they're stage, concert, virtual, teaching...anything! I'm organzied, friendly, and eager to work with new people.

I enjoy the creativity of performing in all of it's different facets; singing, acting, accents, different voices. I also love the creativity and problem solving of teaching others. Every voice and person is different and I love helping people find their own voice.

I was always afraid to start teaching until I took a vocal pedagogy class and had to jump straight in with teaching and coaching. Once I got into it, I loved helping people find their own voices and learning more and more about the funcionality of the voice.

I have a Bachelors in Voice Performance from the Boston Concervatory and a Masters in Voice from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. I've worked with many renowned voice teachers and coaches and performed in master classes with renowned performers and composers. I've sung in classical, musical theater, and contemporary styles. I've also taken vocal pedagogy classes where we learned the vocal anatomy and how to teach. I also have experience in the Alexander Technique.

About the lesson

I typically start out by asking a few basic questions: what are you goals, what is your experience, what do you love about performing. Then I like to start out with some basical exercises to asses the singer's range and skill level as well as to see what things I can hear and see that we can work on to develope skills.

Depending on the length of the lesson and how quickly we move through the exercises, I'll then ask the singer to sing a prepared song (if they have one) or a standard. This way I can hear the voice away from a set tune and then what the voice does with a tune. From there I'll assign some exercises I'd like them to work on while I begin to develope a more long term plan and find music to work on.

I've mainly worked with young teen singers and young adult singers with minimal experience.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, to tell your teacher what you need and if something isn't working, and don't be afraid to try multiple teachers.
