About Riki

Music is my passion, and I am so excited to share it with the youth of our community. I have been teaching children music for seventeen years. My goal as a teacher has always been to educate my students, make them better musicians, and most importantly, to help them LOVE music.

Making music should be rewarding and fun, and the Gilbert Youth Choir staff does everything in their power to give your children a positive environment where they can develop and share their talents. Gilbert Youth Choir is a place where beautiful music is made, new skills are cultivated, and new friendships are formed. Aristotle said, "Music has a power of forming the character, and should therefore be introduced into the education of the young." It is our pleasure to help give your children that education.

One of my strengths is bringing out the best in people in a positive way. I love helping children reach their full potential. I love the looks in their faces when they nail a performance. I love bringing music into their lives. I love everything about the work I do.

I have a B.M. in K-12 Music Education and a M.M in Music Education with a Choral Emphasis. I also play the piano and violin. I studied with ASU vocal faculty from the time I was 15 to the end of my college career. I sang professionally with the Phoenix Chorale for 4 years as a soprano. About the lesson

We always begin by letting the kids get to know one another. After that we move into correct breathing techniques followed by correct vocal techniques and warmups. Warm-up always include vocal building excercises and music theory including solfege with the goal of helping the children learn to sight read music on their own. Once we have concluded that portion we move on to learning and polishing the music that will be sung at the final concert.

I have worked with a large range of students from Kindergarten to college students. I currently focus my efforts on Elementary age students K-6th grade to give them a good vocal and music theory base.

Make sure you find someone who is going to take care of your voice. You want them to teach you to sing in a way that is healthy so your voice can last and develop in the right way. I always recommend that a student wait to study private voice until they are at least 12. Until then, the best vocal training for them is in a choral setting.
