About Sarah
I have 6+ as an educator! MA in curriculum and instruction with a focus in ESL and Bilingual education.
- 4 years experience as a Kindergarten and 1st grade Spanish bilingual classroom teacher. 2 years experience teaching preschool-high school Spanish as a foreign language
My personal connection to bilingual education starts with my love for language and diverse cultures. Starting back in high school, I was in active language clubs at school, along with traveling to different Hispanic countries. Into my adult years, I have a continued passion for travel and culture, along with immigrating to a local Kankakee Hispanic church
In my educational history, I've studied both Spanish and elementary education. My bachelor’s degree provided me with the skills I needed as a classroom teacher, and my higher education master's programs prepared me to work in small groups with students of diverse language backgrounds. Additionally, my master's program specifically focused on implementing bilingual program structures and teaching strategies within a bilingual classroom. With five years of teaching experience within a low income urban city, I have been exposed to the community and worked with families of ESL and bilingual students. I have prepared and instructed many lessons in both English and Spanish. As a Kinder/1st grade teacher, I included tier 2 and tier 3 intervention in SLA and recorded and monitored RTI data for students within my classroom. The move to teach preK-12 Spanish provided exposure to multigrade levels, giving me a new skill set for adapting to various grade levels and age groups. I also have gained experience creating an ESL curriculum and providing ELL support to students from Spain, Thailand, Korea, and Mexico.
My experience as a cross-country and track coach has developed me to be positive, enthusiastic, supportive, trusting, focused, goal-oriented, knowledgeable, observant, respectful, patient, and a clear communicator. As a coach, I help athletes believe in their potential to perform at the next level. By using my coaching characteristics, I can foster a positive and motivating environment for students struggling to grow in a large classroom group setting.
