When I start working with a new student I like to know his/her previous knowledge and his/her interests. I also like to ask about what they would like to learn and their purposes.
I have worked with kids (5-10 Years old) and I have taught to some adults friends.
As a person that studied a second language, I recommend people to study with a native speaker so he/she can learn pronunciation and some expressions that only a native speaker can know. Also I would recommend to search for materials to study by his/her own like TV shows, music, readings, etc.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
"Why do I want to learn spanish?"
"What is my purpose learning spanish?"
