About Stephen

1 year Spanish Medical Interpreter & Translator

6 years High School Spanish Teacher

Lifelong Math aficionado

State Winning Chess Coach (Texas)

I LOVE helping students overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams!

I want to help YOU get where YOU want to be!

Teaching is a natural passion.  I gave my first full class lecture in Latin Class at 16 years old.

Later in college, I was selected to co-teach honors seminars to incoming college freshman and began my formal training in lesson planning fundamentals.  I did this for two semesters before teaching high schoolers English in the Dominican Republic.

After graduating from college I had a few jobs, but most of my experience has been as a high school teacher.  I have served as department head, administrator for the 9th grade, and tournament-winning chess coach.

My favorite topics to teach are Spanish, mathematics, logic, history, chess, and literary analysis.

6 years Spanish teacher (with countless hours of continuing professional development)

1 year medical interpreter/translator at children's hospital

I get to know the student's interests and abilities.

I have extensive ability and countless hours of professional development in assessing a student's abilities so as to know how best to introduce and scaffold new concepts.

As a respected teacher/administrator, my expertise in diagnosing individual student's needs is strong.

I have worked with a higher variety of students from a diverse array of learning, developmental, and cultural backgrounds.  As a teaching professional I am familiar with tailoring instruction to meet the specific needs of students.

grades k-5 & 6-12 (two years Boys & Girls Club, Youth Development Associate, homework tutor)

9-12th (6 years high school teacher with strong teaching differentiation skills)

college freshman (two semesters)

If it's Spanish, think about what things you like (movies, music, sports, etc.) and try to tune in to those things for fun without even knowing what you are listening to.  You will find out new things about culture that you didn't know before that may increase your interest in the language.  Once your interested you will learn much better!

I often look at translating songs or movie clips with my students and they love figuring out what people are saying!

I have a student right now who has a learning impairment and often needs extra assistance on assignments. She has become very inspired in studying Spanish and was showing great progress.  On her last test she got an 'A' without any extra assistance!  I'm so proud of her!

Another student who struggled writing came to my tutoring to improve his writing.  He can now write a short research essay in his Leadership/Government class in twenty minutes, because he knows what he's doing.  On his last essay he got an 'A' and said it was a breeze!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of teaching style do you learn best from?

What is something that you learned really well?  What was it that the teacher did that helped you master that skill or idea?

When do you notice you need to have instruction repeated?  When do you notice that you need to have instruction repeated the least?

What are your learning goals?

What are the study goals and habits that you are willing to commit to?
