About Isabel

I have a master's degree in Spanish History from the Universidad de Duesto in Spain. I earned my teaching license, and since then I have worked for over ten years as a Spanish tutor. I work with students of all ages and levels, both kids and adults. I love working with groups, and I also do Spanish Camps for children.

I love teaching because I can connect to people on a personal level and help them reach their goals. It makes me happy to work with students who have a passion for the language. I love working with children in groups because of the energy and excitement they bring. Learning and growing with my students is what makes teaching Spanish so special for me.

I started teaching Spanish to adult students at the Spanish Institute of New York in 1994. I have been tutoring high school students in Glen Ridge and Montclair since 2009.

I have a masters degree in history along with teacher certification. I have also participated in various methodology seminars for children learning Spanish as a second language.

About the lesson

Working with adult students, I always look for their interest in learning the language. We then develop the class according to their needs.

I work with young children, adolescents and adults. My lessons are geared to the age of the student as well as their level of competency, from beginner to advanced. I've also tutored non-native teachers of Spanish in the nuances of the Spanish Proficiency Exam in New Jersey.

Look for someone with whom you are comfortable. Learning a language involves a certain Zen, and if the chemistry between the tutor and student is not a good fit, then language acquisition will suffer.

I do a lot of work with children. Occasionally, they come from homes where only one of the parents is a native Spanish speaker. In homes like this, English is the lingua franca and the children have little if no exposure to the parent's native language. I recently tutored the child of one such family, and after several months the mother came to me to express her appreciation: her daughter had returned from a lesson and began speaking to her in Spanish.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should consider what level of Spanish he or she wants to develop. Is it for conversational competency, or are the student's needs more academic, requiring formal and advanced grammar that will enable a fluent and sophisticated level of dialogue and writing. This informs the content and structure of the lesson.
