About Benjamin

I began tutoring in middle school, as part of a before-school program and continued to practice my skills as a tutor throughout high school as part of the Spanish National Honor Society, by helping students improve upon their Spanish speaking, reading and writing skills. I have also been studying Spanish since the sixth grade, which has allowed me to obtain a deep understanding of every aspect of the language and receive the Seal of Biliteracy last year, when I graduated from High School. Overall, I feel that my many years of studying Spanish, combined with my use of the language in my everday life, will help my students in achieving their goals.

I was raised in a bicultural household, to a Mexican father and American mother, but I did not learn Spanish as a child, which motivated me to acquire this skill on my own. As I started to practice more, I fell in love with the language and began using it in my everyday life. Therefore, I would love for my students to obtain this same appreciation and passion for the Spanish language that I continue to have today.

I began tutoring in middle school as a before-school program, primarily helping my peers improve in math and English. However, I started tutoring Spanish in High School for the Spanish National Honor Society, which allowed me to provide other students with tips and help them learn the Spanish language.

I began studying Spanish in the sixth grade and have continued to take classes over the years, as I am approaching my second year at Emory University and pursuing a minor in Spanish. I also use the language in my everyday life by communicating with friends and family. Moreover, I worked at a Mexican Restaurant for two years, which enabled me to converse with both employees and customers, improving my proficiency even further.

About the lesson

I inititate the lesson by getting to know the student, inquiring about their prior knowledge, and asking which task they would like to focus on. Following that, I focus on this task and provide them with certain tips that would help them improve upon it, such as giving an acronym/mneumonic device in order to remember a certain word or phrase. However, if they are a beginner, I provide my students with common words, phrases, and verbs that will be applicable to using Spanish in their everyday life.

I have typically worked with my peers over the years, beginning with the programs in middle school and high school. I have continued helping peers most recently by helping two other college students prepare for their final exams in Spanish. Overall, I am open to working with students of all ages and backgrounds.
