About Nicole

I have over 20 years experience teaching, 15 of those teaching foreign languages. I love kids of all ages. I am willing to do anything in my power to help students succeed. My students teach me as much as I teach them. Social Media is a place to connect for new ideas in Language Learning.

I love to learn, and I love helping others learn. I am fascinated by other languages and cultures. It is exciting to find connections with people who come from different places and cultural practices.

I studied languages in high school, fell in love with the idea of bilingualism and interacting with other cultures, traveled abroad and that was it for me.

I have a degree in French and Spanish, 20+ years of experience in a classroom teaching Language, and I have put my language skills to good use by traveling the world and connecting to a variety of cultures in my local community.

About the lesson

I prefer a session to get to know students, their needs and goals, and their interests. Once we have identified their needs, we can begin to set some targets for language and learning objectives. From there, we can begin our Language Journey using a variety of activities to reach our targets.

I taught in public schools in Oklahoma, Georgia, and Texas for 25 years. This included students of different socioeconomic backgrounds, a variety of races and ethnicities, over 60 languages, and ages from preschool to adulthood. I served as an Americorps Member for two terms working in after school programs, tutoring bilingual and ESL students, and serving adults through the Salvation Army and English Classes. I have served in my church family as a Religious Educator, Chaperone, and Coordinator for 16 years while also working in the Catering and Restaurant Industry. I have served in Rotary International for 13 years in youth leadership camps, high school service clubs, and youth exchange programs. Through church and Rotary, I regularly encountered various needs, backgrounds, cultures, and languages.

Choose a teacher who is interested in what you can "do" with your language skills rather than what you "know" about the language. Look for someone who is excited about language and culture together. Be sure they are experienced with the ACTFL Standards and what each level looks like. Find someone who chooses a variety of methods and activities, experiential and hands-on. Expect Real-world connections in the language that are intentional, purposeful, and useful for you. Someone who is curious about your likes and interests and who makes learning fun is what you want.

I recently participated in a fundraiser for the Malayika Foundation, which benefits students in Africa who can't afford the necessary uniforms and supplies needed to attend school. It was inspiring to see American students excited about giving their time and earnings for a worthy cause.
