About Kevin
We teach people who want to make surfing their passion how to improve quickly and permanently. We teach more than just how to stand up. We teach proper paddling, how to read the waves, and how to surf in a crowded lignup. You will come away with knowledge about how to continue to improve without our help.
Sharing the joy of surfing and the ocean is like no other feeling on earth.
I have been surfing since I was 14 years old living in San Diego my whole life. I have been teaching surf lessons since 2004. I am a former lifeguard, and will keep you safe in the water.

About the lesson

We will suggest beaches to meet at based on surf size and conditions. We will meet you wherever you are. We only teach lessons when the conditions are right for learning. If the surf is too big or too small we will reschedule.
Our typical lesson consists of 30 minute warm up on the beach, then 90 minutes in the water. If you choose to have video, we will provide video feedback so you can watch yourself surf.
We have worked with all types of students from never been in the water to experienced water enthusiasts. Age is not a factor.
Make sure they're not going to take you out in bad conditions.
Recently 12 year old Caroline moved from Arizona to San Diego. She told her parents she wanted to try surfing. After 3 lessons with Step Up Surf, she was able to surf on her own without our help. Her biggest struggle was paddling into waves on her own, but we helped her realize she was not paddling long enough to fully catch the wave.

Professional, really knowledgeable about SD surf, and surf culture. Kevin blends mindfulness into his lessons, ocean respect. This guy has surfed all over the world, his program is safe & effective.
I had surfed a few times when I was younger, so I could stand up and surf at an intermediate level. After a few lessons with Kevin showing me proper technique, I'm more confident, I catch more waves, and have more fun out in the ocean.
