About Jiri

Hi,

I am originally from the Czech Republic and I used to play at a national level. I am 38 father of two girls (along with my wife those are the only human beings I can't coach ;)

I give private or small group tennis lesson to players of all levels. I am very patient with my students and love to make them feel good on the court. My biggest satisfaction comes from seeing students excited when they come for the next lesson. I approach every student as an individual as there is no one fits all method. Some students like their coach to be nice and friendly others make more progress with a bit more strict approach.

I always give my students 100 % and I am happy when they see that. I like to explain what we need to work on and what we will focus on during each session. I praise when there is a reason - but never overdo it as that from my experience rarely works.

I started in 2003 with 2 brothers from Potomac. I was originally their swim teacher and when their parents saw me playing tennis next to the pool they also asked for tennis lesson. By the end of the summer my schedule was full. It was probably a combination of a good price, good results and friendly approach.

I have a tier 3 Czech Tennis Federation coaching license. I have been coaching for over 15 years - mostly summer periods. I used to be a PE and English teacher in Czech so I am use to be around kids.

About the lesson

I prefer to give private lesson - both for adults and kids. I like to focus 100 % on one student at a time - each student usually needs a different approach. However, I am not against small group lessons for kids (up to 4 students). Group sessions are sometimes good for kids who need to see others trying hard so that they push themselves a bit more.

All levels, all ages. The only level I never coached were professional players.

Trust your instinct. You can't tell if you two are gonna "hit it off" until you have the first lesson.

I started giving lesson to an energetic 75 year old lady, who decided to take up tennis at this age. Now she can hit all the basic strokes and she absolutely fell in love with the sport.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's not exactly about questions as these will arise during the session. But it's good to tell them about sports that you did - especially those that you are good at. It helps the coach to make analogies to what you already know.

Also, tell them what approach suits you. Some people like when the coaches are strict, some like a more relaxed atmosphere.

If you already have some experience tell them what aspect of your game you would like to improve. A good coach should be able to tell without it but it still helps to know.

He is always on time, is pleasant and never make you feel stupid! He is also professional, knows his tennis, history and techniques. My first teacher and coach and peaked my interest in the game, both as spectator and player.
