About James

Hi!

I like to help others. I find social interaction more stimulating and rewarding than my current desk job.

I work full time as an actuarial analyst, partly from home and partly in Manhattan.

Most recently I tutored for 10 months from 2016 to 2017 at a small tutoring business, the Huntington Learning Center, in Suffolk County, New York. I tutored mostly high school math (various Regents, especially Geometry, etc.), SAT Math prep, ACT Math and Science, and some ISEE (test for private high school admission) and middle school math.

I tutored various college level math subjects for 3 months or so in my final year of my Bachelor's degree.

Also many years ago I worked for 10 months roughly 15-20 hours per week in the America Reads program at an elementary school.

I have a Master's in Actuarial Science from St. John's University and a Bachelor's in Applied Math, with a Concentration in Financial Math, from Farmingdale State College.

I've passed five Casualty Actuarial Society actuarial exams: Exam 1/P, Exam 2/FM, Exam 3/IFM, Exam 4/C, and Exam MAS-I. I'm working on a certification of Associate in an Actuarial Society, which is two more exams.

I received a score of 1520 on the SAT (out of 1600) which I think was 99th percentile, and a score of 770 on SAT Writing. I received scores of 730 and 710 on SAT Math I and II. (Though these scores were many years ago!)

I know some light programming, especially SQL, and some VBA.

I usually very much enjoy interacting with the students. I sit at a desk all day, and my human interaction is limited.

Please refer also to my tutoring experience.

In high school I took eight AP classes, and got 5 on AP Calculus, World History, and U.S. History.

I have a Bachelor's in Applied Mathematics and a Master's in Actuarial Science. I've passed actuarial exams 1/P, 2/FM, 3/MFE (now IFM), 4/C (now STAM), and MAS-I.

Listening and Diagnosis..

What's their learning style - they have a mental structure for the material already and need me to fill in the blanks? Or they need a totally new structure?

I would say ability to teach is more important than a perfect knowledge of the material.

Becoming a dad

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Communicate both strengths and weaknesses... which is hard. As in, self-discipline vs. not, easily distractable vs. not, do well studying for long hours or better in short bursts, stuff like that
