I have been teaching in the greater Boston area for over 12 years; either it is at the Boston Conservatory, or The New England Conservatory or it is in the public school system, I have shared some very precious moments of music. It is the moments I really saw the passion in the students’ eyes,no matter what backgrounds or skills levels. When I was teaching as a guest fellow with the Boston Chamber society in a pubic school program last year ,I found out that the students only get to come in 2 hours a week to use the instruments from the instrument locker; no private practicing time at home. Even with this impossible circumstance, they are still so happy every week when they come in to the classroom and pick up the violins to play with me. It was certainly a situation where the teacher needs more walking through and practicing with the students on the spot. It required more patience and listening. But as an educator, you can feel the passion the students have and that gives me confident and strength. On many levels, I think I have learnt more from the students than what I have taught them; it is definitely rewarding for me to see students from different ages and backgrounds succeed, whether it is a local recital they have been practicing for, or getting into a major conservatory like The Berklee School of Music, The Juilliard School or The New England Conservatory.

About the lesson

Every student is different. There are some basic patterns through out the string instruments learning curve but I believe a teacher should be sensitive about the individuality and tailor one’s teaching to different students. I value teaching solid long term basics as much as inspire them to love the instru- ment they picked. In the end, this is probably the most important stage in a student’s life; they could find themselves loving music and decided to be- come a professional musician. I believe the order to elevate the student’s musical artistry from technical foundation to creative musicality to one’s true unique musical voice.
