About Chris
Hello, my name is Chris and I am a chemist. I achieved my BSc in Chemistry with specialization in 2016 at the University of Alberta and my MSc in Organometallic Chemistry in 2019 at the University of Ottawa.
My tutoring experience has been sporadic throughout both of my degrees, but the gaps have been filled with teaching in a variety of first and second year chemistry courses; I have also acted directly as a mentor to multiple first year students simultaneously in a lab setting, so I have a strong grasp on how to teach the fundamentals in both a group and individual setting.
In addition, I have worked within several organizations as a professional tutor for students ages 8 to 50, where I taught everything from basic mathematics to conversational English.

University: Introductory Chemistry 1, Introductory Chemistry 2, Organic Chemistry 1, Organic Chemistry 2, Organic Chemistry 3, Organic Chemistry 4, Physics 1
Regarding teaching philosophy:
I am a firm believer in being very hands-on when first broaching a new subject, but giving students room to practice and master the knowledge and skills once they have the basics. The most important thing I try to pass on to my students is a consistent methodology:
1) Can you identify what is being asked of you?
2) Can you identify relevant variables and other information?
3) Can you formulate a plan to get from point A to point B?
When it comes to university subjects, I try to focus on teaching fundamentals first rather than focusing on the individual subject's material exclusively; I know many students struggle the most with the subjects outside of their wheelhouse, and so I try to pass on skills that will be universally applicable, such as problem solving, critical thinking, and concise communication.

Chris was a labmate and mentor of mine while working in a chemistry research lab at the University of Ottawa. When I started working in this lab as a first-year undergraduate student, I was unconfident in my skillset, extremely inexperienced with regards to lab techniques, and only had a shallow understanding of organic and inorganic chemistry. Over time, he not only trained me in lab techniques, but he also taught me various chemistry concepts that helped me excel in subsequent chemistry courses that I took.
As an example, when I joined the lab, I knew nothing about nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. However, Chris patiently taught me the fundamentals of NMR, which increased my skillset as a researcher, boosted my confidence in the chemistry field, and allowed me to easily breeze through the NMR module in the second-year organic chemistry course!
From my experience, Chris is an effective communicator and a thorough teacher. He also provides encouragement and acknowledges when progress is being made. He really makes it his mission to see his students improve and is a strong choice for tutoring services!Chris is a colleague of mine from our undergraduate education in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta. Chris won a major of award for his mastery of organic chemistry, and I have witnessed him tutor a number of students to a success outcome in their chemistry courses.
Chris is an excellent listener, and meets students wherever they are in their chemistry journey. He expertly communicates complicated subjects to both his students and colleagues, and has a well-earned reputation as an excellent educator in the chemical sciences.View more recommendations
