About John
I have over 25 years of experience helping students of all ages perform research in a library setting. I have two Masters Degrees and a BA in English-Writing Emphasis. I love the research-writing process, as well as assisting others in taking a broad topic to a thesis, and ultimately a finished essay or research paper. I invest myself in the success of those I assist, and to help them find their own voice through the process of working on a research topic. I am currently a library director for a graduate-level educational program in Jackson, MS. I have also worked in large public libraries, serving patrons of all ages and backgrounds. My goal in being your tutor is to come alongside you and help you become a better researcher and writer, putting my own educational and professional experience to work for your success.

The first step is to identify and fully understand the goal and requirements of the assignment or research project. When possible, I always look for a way to help the student select a topic that is of personal interest to him or her. Early on, we need answer basic questions, such as, How much time do I have? How familiar am I with the topic? What resources are available to me on the topic? Once we have clarity on the purpose of the paper, we outline a research strategy to achieve that goal. Some preliminary research may be necessary to become familiar enough with the topic to understand the relevant issues, events, people, places, etc. associated with it. The early stages of the research process involve taking a broad topic to a working thesis. As we engage with primary and tertiary sources on the topic, we will begin to see possible trajectories the paper may take. Once we have narrowed the topic down, we can begin to reference secondary sources as we work toward defining the thesis of the paper. Once we have a working thesis, that thesis will then guide all subsequent research.
Elementary to graduate level.
